from the Lybian threshing-floors. Him who is rejoicing to cleave the paternal fields with the hoe, you would never divert (from that employment) by the hoardings (or wealth) of Attalus (that) as a fearful sailor he should cut the Myrtoan Sea in a Cyprian bark. The merchant, fearing the south-west wind struggling with Icarian waves, praises tranquility and the fields of his (native) place; but presently he repairs his shattered ships, unable-to-be-taught to bear poverty. There is (one) who despises neither goblets of old Massic (wine), nor to take-away a part from the solid day, at one time lying with his limbs stretched out under the arbutus-tree, at another near the head of some sacred stream. Camps delight many, and the sound of the trumpet mixed with the clarion, and wars detested by mothers. The hunter remains (at night) under the cold sky, unmindful of his tender spouse; whether a hart has been seen by his faithful hounds, or a Marsian boar has broken the wellwrought toils. Me, ivy, the reward (or crown) of learned brows, mingles with the gods above: me, the cool grove and the light dances of nymphs with Satyrs distinguish from the (common) people, if neither Euterpe witholds her flute, nor Polyhymnia refuses to string the Lesbian lyre. But if thou (¿.e., Mæcenas) shalt include me among the lyric bards, I shall strike the stars with sublime head."

CORNOUAILLES.-There is a flaw in your attempt to solve No. 7. You assume that CG and AG will meet on the line DF. This should be proved. We insert a solution this month.

J. H. R.-Thanks for your support and suggestions. We wish you success in your new career. We shall probably take up one or two of the subjects you name shortly.

JOSEPH MAWSON.-We are obliged to you for calling attention to the omission. It was done quite inadvertently. We will consider the grammatical point you raise.

W. D. N. We are scarcely in a position yet to carry out your suggestion. GRATIA. We agree with you as to the difficulty of the arithmetic paper. We insert solutions to several of the most instructive in this month's number. We are not at present prepared to issue fortnightly. Part I. ends at "and by the power, of wrong" (in the Ode).

GENERAL REMARKS.

Not quite one-fourth of the increase in population is said to be due to immigration, the remaining three-fourths is the natural growth of the population.

By far the greatest growth has been west of the Mississippi. The country south-east of the Mississippi has made a greater proportionate increase than that north-east of the Mississippi. The greatest growths have been in the Northern States, west of the Mississippi, in the Pacific States, and in the territories. The smallest growths have been in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Delaware.

The United States now ranks after China, the British Empire, and Russia, with respect to population.

THOMAS CARLYLE.

OUR number for February contained a memorial notice of England's greatest female writer, George Eliot. Since that article was written, our greatest man of letters has also gone to his rest. Thomas Carlyle died on Saturday, February 5th, full of years, and honoured by all English-speaking people throughout the world.

Thomas Carlyle was born in the parish of Middlebie, near the small village of Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, December 4th, 1795, a few months before the death of Robert Burns. His father was a kind of farmer, an Elder of the parish kirk of Ecclefechan, a man of high principles, fond of reading, and possessing an intelligent mind. His mother was also a woman of great intelligence and
