The Hindu College, Tinnevelly.

This institution was established on the 27th March 1861 by. a Committee formed of local native gentlemen, and was placed under the management of an European by name. Mr. Sullivan. The connection of this gentleman with the school was but short-lived. Elementary and middle class education was being imparted for several years, until, in 1867 students were sent up for the Matriculation Examination for the first time. The repeated success in this examination during the subsequent years, and even the present reputation of the school are due, in a great measure, to the energetic and laudable exertions of the then Head Master, G. Gopalakrishna Mudaliyar, B. A.

This institution is now affiliated to the Madras University and is teaching up to the F. A. standard. It has, on this account, altered its original name "The Hindu AngloVernacular School, Tinnevelly," to the present designation of "The Hindu College, Tinnevelly," and is now the first in the District with regard to the numerical strength of the pupils and their attendance, its financial condition, and the quality of education therein imparted. The number

of students on the rolls is about 300, of which 12 are free scholars. The average monthly collection of school fees is Rs. 436, and the Government Grant Rs. 228.

There is a Sanscrit Department in the institution containing about 20 students; there is also a library composed of the works of most of the standard authors, general books of reference, and a set of apparatus for the study of physical science.

A prize for hand-writing was recently instituted by J. Pennington, Esq., Collector of the District.

Owing to the demise of several of the members that formed the original School Committee, there took place on the 22nd of May 1878, a new organization which resulted in a General Committee of 33 members, out of which was shaped, for executive purposes, a Managing Committee consisting of eight Members, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. The teaching staff at present consists of:

T. V. Krishna Pillai, B.A., (Madras); Acting Head Master S. M. Navanitha Krishna Pillai, B. A., (Madras); A. T. Sabhapathi Pillai, Senior Tamil Munshee; Ramakrishna Sastri, Sanscrit Munshi, College Department; and Three First Arts and Six Matriculated Masters, Two 5th Grade Masters, a Junior Tamil Munshi, and a Writing Master, School Department.

Hindu High School, Vizagapatam.

This Institution was founded by Sir Alexander Grant, Bart., and E. Fane, Esq., with the co-operation of the Zemindars and Proprietors of the District. It is managed by a Committee of which the Collector of the District for the time being, is the President, and the Hon. G. N. Gajapatirau, the Vice-President.

The first President was Captain (now Colonel) R. M. Macdonald; and the Foundation Stone of the School house was laid by the Hon. D. F. Carmichael, on the 24th May 1862.

The School is supported by Government Grant-in-aid, School Fees, and Subscriptions, of which the largest is Rs. 100 a month from H. H. the Maharajah of Vizianagram, K.C.S.I. The Institution educates up to the F. A. standard of the Madras University; and is open to all classes except Pariahs. Two Scholarships in the College Department are endowed in memory of the late Secretary, Ch. Venkataswami Naidu.

The Kerala Vidyasala.
(Talli, Calicut.)

In June 1877 His Highness the Zamorin Rajah of Calicut, in conjunction with the senior members of his family, determined, on the advice of the Collector, Mr. Logan, to start an English school for the education of the young Rajahs. The school was accordingly opened and held in

the Talli Palace. In the course of a few weeks about twenty young Rajahs were attending school regularly. This school, named the Zamorin's High School, was placed under the charge of Mr. Barrow (a Graduate of Oxford) and three assistants. In the same year and month a private school was opened by Mr. Barrow under the name of the Malabar High School which soon had nearly 200 boys on its rolls, and from which five pupils passed the Matriculation Examination of 1877, one being placed in the first class. After some discussion it was resolved, at Mr. Barrow's suggestion, to amalgamate the two schools from the beginning of 1878,-but tomake the new school thus formed select, by only admitting caste boys. This was done, His Highness the Zamorin setting apart a considerable portion of the Talli Palace for school purposes. The name of the amalgamated schools was, as suggested by the Collector, changed to that of Kerala Vidyàsàla.

On the 3rd of August 1878, the Government of Madras passed the following Order (No. 374) on a letter from Mr. Logan, the Collector, bringing to their notice the establishment of the Kèrala Vidyàsàla.

"His Grace the Governor in Council is pleased to express the utmost satisfaction with the enlightened and liberal action of Manavikrama, Zamorin of Calicut, in establishing the Kèrala Vidyàsàla.

2. The Acting Director of Public Instruction will, in communication with the Collector of Malabar, submit detailed proposals for a School Library and Apparatus to be presented by Government in recognition of the public spirit of the leading member of Native Society in Malabar." On the 13th September, Government passed the following additional Order (No. 423) "The sum of Rupees 1,815 is placed at the disposal of H. H. The Zamorin, for the purchase of a small Library, Physical Science Apparatus,

and Physiological Diagrams and Models to be used in the Kerala Vidyàsàla, Calicut. "

mensem.

During the year 1878 the school worked with fair success, the average number on the rolls for the year being rather over 200, and the fee receipts averaging Rupees 300 per At the Matriculation Examination of 1878 only two boys passed out from the school owing to the severity of that year's test. In February 1879 the school was affiliated to the University of Madras and raised to the grade of a Collegiate School, educating up to the F. A. standard.

The school, which is now on a sound and firm footing, is situated in Talli, occupying that part of the Talli Palace which extends the whole length of the eastern side of the great Talli tank. There are at present 360 boys on the rolls, 35 in the College Department, 158 in the Upper School (VIth and Vth classes), 108 in the Middle School (IVth and IIIrd classes), 59 in the Lower School (IInd and Ist classes). The School Department has been placed under Government inspection.

The average fee collections now amount to rather over 560 Rupees a month; these, with a grant of Rs. 370 per mensem from the Zamorin and the members of his family, constitute the whole income of the school.

The teaching staff is a strong one, composed of 4 B.A.'s including the Principal, 2 F.A.'s, 7 Matriculates, and 2 Munshis (Sanskrit and Malayalam). The work of the College and Matriculation Classes is shared among the following masters:

Cecil M. Barrow, B.A., (Hertford College, Oxford), Principal.

T. Panchapakesa Aiyar, B.A., (Madras), 1st Assistant. U. Sankaran Nayar, B.A., (Madras), 2nd Assistant.
