52. Candidates shall be examined in the following branches of knowledge: i. ENGLISH LAnguage, in which each Candidate must undergo examination. ii. OPTIONAL LANGUAGE. One of the following languages at the option of the Can (a) Freeman's General Sketch of European History. (b) A selected portion of Ancient History, to be specified by the Syndicate two years previous to the examination. N.B.-The Examiners shall be at liberty to put geographical questions bearing upon the historical subjects. iv. MATHEMATICS. (a) Arithmetic.-The whole subject. (b) Algebra.—Addition, Subtraction, Division, Involution, and Evolution. Greatest Common Measure and Least Common Mul- Simple and Quadratic Equations, with Problems. Permutations and Combinations. Arithmetical, Geometrical, and Harmonical Progressions, Binomial Theorem. (c) Geometry.-Euclid-Books I, II, III, IV, VI, and XI to proposition 21, with Deductions. * In the Déva Nágari character only. (d) Plane Trigonometry.—The solution of Plane Recti lineal Figures, with the investigations of the Formulæ required in the several processes. The construction of Tables of Goniometric Functions. V. ELEMENTS OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY. Huxley's Elementary Lessons in Physiology. (First seven lessons). 53. There shall be three papers on the English language, two of which shall bear exclusively on the authors brought up for examination, while the third shall contain passages for paraphrase and explanation not taken from the textbooks, and general questions on the grammar, idiom, and structure of the language. In the second language there shall be two papers, of which one shall contain questions on the text-books and on the grammar, structure, and idiom of the language, while the other shall consist wholly of passages for translation from English into the second language, and from the second language into English, with the addition, in the case of Vernacular languages, of original composition. The passage for translation from English into the Vernacular shall be the same for all languages. The passages for translation from the second language into English shall consist partly of extracts from the text-books and partly of extracts of somewhat less difficulty from other authors. 54. The paper on Euclid, Books I to VI, and Algebra, as well as that on Euclid, Book XI, and Plane Trigonometry, shall consist mainly of book-work, and the riders and problems introduced into it shall be only of moderate difficulty. 55. The questions in each subject shall not be more in respect of number or of difficulty, than can be answered within the allowed time by a Candidate of decided ability well prepared in the subject. 56. The First Examination in Arts shall be conducted in the order of time and subjects set forth in the following table, and the number of marks assignable to each subject shall be as therein specified : :- 57. The Examiners shall be appointed not less than three months before the time fixed for the examination, in order that they may have ample time for exercising care and deliberation in the preparation of their papers. 58. Previous to the transmission of the examination papers to the Registrar, each Examiner shall submit his paper, together with the marks he intends to assign to each question, to his colleagues in the same subject for remarks and suggestions, the adoption of which, however, shall be left to his own discretion. *100 marks are allowed for Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Arabic and Persian. 59. On or before a day to be fixed from time to time by the Syndicate, each Examiner shall prepare a list of the marks awarded by him to each Candidate in each paper or portion of a paper set by him, and shall forward the same to the Registrar or to the gentleman appointed by the Syndicate to assist the Registrar in the tabulation of the results. The Tabulator shall thereupon draw up a statement in the annexed form and submit it to the Syndicate through the Registrar. 60. The Candidates shall be ranked in the order of proficiency as determined by the total marks obtained by each, and shall be arranged in two classes :— The 1st, consisting of those who have obtained not less than one-half of the aggregate number of marks. The 2nd, of those who have obtained not less than onethird of the aggregate number of marks. Candidates failing to obtain one-third of the marks in English, one-fourth in each of the other branches, or onethird upon the whole, shall not pass. * Provided always that any Candidate who fails in one or more subjects, except the English language, shall nevertheless be allowed to pass, if he secures one-third of the aggregate number of marks, after deducting the marks gained by him in the subject or subjects in which he has failed. The Tabulator shall be at liberty to bracket men when the difference between them amounts only to a very small number of marks. 61. Form of Statement to be submitted by the Tabulator. III. EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS. 62 An examination for the Degree of B. A. shall be held in Madras once a year, commencing on the 2nd Monday in February. 63. Candidates for the Degree of B. A. must have completed two years from the time of passing the First Examination in Arts either in this or one of the other Indian Universities. 64. Applications for admission to this examination must reach the Registrar not later than the 1st November. Each Candidate must forward with his application a certificate of his having passed the First Examination in Arts and a certificate from the Head of some College or school authorized in that behalf by the Governor of Fort St. George in Council to the effect that he has studied the subjects prescribed for this examination and has attended an authorized institution or institutions for a period of at |
