PART I.

JULIUS AND AUGUSTUS CÆSAR.

I. Specify the objects for which Pompey was, on five separate occasions, invested with extraordinary powers, and show how his

fast assumption of such power, together with the measures that led to it, brought on the struggle between him and Julius Cæsar.

II. State the terms of (a) the compact entered into by the members of the Second Triumvirate, and how it was variously modified by (d) the Peace of Brundusium, and the Treaties of (c) Misenum and (b) Tarentum; by what operations of war, in the interval between (a) and (b), the senatorial party was broken up, and by what subsequent to (d), the rivals for supremacy were reduced to two viz., Octavius and Antony.

III. (a.)-Define the boundaries and enumerate the Provinces, of the Roman Empire at the death of Augustus. (b.) Explain how the mode of their administration differed from that under the Republic, and with what benefits to the Provincials. (c.) Show the special importance of Sicily, Africa, and Egypt to the city of Rome, and (d) give a very brief sketch of the connection of Egypt (prior to its becoming a province) with the personal history of each of the four great leaders in the civil war.

IV. State what offices of the Republican constitution Augustus combined in his own person, and what powers or prerogatives he exercised in virtue of these.

V. (a.)-Connect important events with the following dates: B. C. 63, 55, 48, 44, and A. D. 14. (b.) State over whom and by whom the following victories were gained: Pistoria, Zela, Carrhae, the Teutobergian Forest. (c). Describe the battle of Actium.

PART II.

EUROPEAN HISTORY.

VI. The political development of a people is very much influen. ced by the physical features of their country. In the light of this proposition contrast, somewhat in detail, the development of the ancient Greeks with that of their kinsfolk, the people of the Italian peninsula.

VII. (a.)—Justify the statement :-"Rome is the central point of all European History."

(b.)—Say very briefly what you know of any four of the following:-Pericles, Justinian, Charlemagne, Martin Luther, Napoleon Buonaparte.

V. Two persons rented some fields for £243 for 10 months. The one put in 27 oxen to graze for 3 months, and the other 270 sheep for 7 months. If 3 oxen eat as much as 11 sheep, how much of the rent ought each to pay?

VI. There are two compound metals, the one consisting of a mixture of copper and gold, and the other of a mixture of copper and

silver. The values of one ounce of gold, silver, and copper are £5, 5 shillings, and 5 pence respectively. Find how much copper must be mixed with the first mixture, in order that the value of a given quantity of the first mixture may be 15 times the value of an equal weight of the second mixture, the latter mixture containing 80 per cent. of pure silver.

VII. A well is fed by a spring which flows continuously and uniformly into it. When there are 10,000 cubic feet of water in the well, 7 men can empty it in 20 days; and when there are 15,000 cubic feet of water in the well, 5 men can empty it in 50 days. How many cubic feet of water flow into the well in one day.

VIII. A merchant sells 49 quarters of wheat at a profit of 7 per cent., and a certain number of quarters at a profit of 11 per cent. The price of a quarter of wheat being £3-12-6, he would have lost £2-10-9 if he had sold the whole at a profit of 9 per cent. Find the total number of quarters of wheat sold by him.

IX. If £31,250 put out at Compound Interest amount in 3 years to £43,904, what is the rate per cent ?

X. If the True Discount on a bill of £14,641 be £4,641 at 10 per cent. Compound Interest, how many years has the bill to run?

XI. A man has a certain amount of 5 per cent. stock. He sells out one-third of it at 104 and invests the proceeds in the 4 per cents at 98. He sells out from the 4 per cents when they have risen 2 per cent., and then repurchases the same amount of 5 per cent. stock at 102 as he sold out originally. His gain being £202, find the amount of 5 per cent. stock originally held by him.
