It is a decimal system of great simplicity and has been adopted in nearly all civilized countries except the United States and the British Empire. It is almost universally used by scientists. The primary units are the meter, liter, and gram. . All other units are named from the primary units by using Latin and Greek prefixes. The Latin prefixes denote parts of the primary unit; the Greek prefixes denote multiples of the primary unit. Latin Prefixes Greek Prefixes Deca means 10; thus, decameter means 10 meters. Hecto means 100; thus, hectometer means 100 meters. Kilo means 1000; thus, kilometer means 1000 meters. Myria means 10,000 ; thus, myriameter means 10,000 meters.
