COINAGE OF FIVE-CENT PIECES. Mr. SHERMAN. I move to postpone al prior orders and take up the bill (H. R. No. 397) to authorize the coinage of five-cent pieces. It will take only the time occupied in reading it, I think. I do not suppose there will be any objection to it.

It provides that so soon as practicable after its passage there shall be coined at the Mint of the United States a fivecent piece, composed of copper and nickel, in such proportions, not exceeding twenty-five per cent. of nickel, as shall be determined by the Director of the Mint, the standard weight of which is to be sixty grains, with no greater deviation than four grains to each piece; and the shape, mottoes, and devices are to be determined by the Director of the Mint, with the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury; and the law now in force relating to the coinage of cents, and providing for the purchase of material, and prescribing the appropriate duties of the officers of the Mint and the Secretary of the Treasury is extended to the coinage herein provided for
This coin is to be a legal tender in any payment to the amount of one dollar.
