PREFACE

THIS book is intended primarily to follow our First Course in Algebra, but it is well adapted for use after any good firstyear text. It gives a brief but thorough review of the topics of the First Course, and includes a sufficient amount of advanced material to meet the needs of any class in second-year or intermediate algebra, whether the course be a half year or a year in length. The content of the book fully meets the requirements for college entrance.

The leading features of our First Course have been incorporated in this book. Among them we call attention to the simplicity of the treatment, the introductory paragraphs which link each chapter to that which has gone before, the number and arrangement of the illustrative examples, the great number of word problems, the extent and variety of the graphic material, and the emphasis which has been laid upon the formula.

As in our First Course the pupil is led to review constantly the work he has had by means of short reviews at the end of most of the exercises. Besides these an extended general review is provided at the end of the book for classes which need it.

We have tried in this book to develop the function concept which is so necessary for success in higher mathematics. In developing this and other topics, however, we have attempted to maintain the same simplicity which is a feature of our First Course. We have not lost sight of the fact that we are writing for boys and girls of immature minds, and not for experienced mathematicians.
