PREFACE.

THE present volume has been found' insufficient to complete my original plan, without enlarging it to a very disproportionate, as well as inconvenient size. It has, therefore, been deemed advisable to conclude this volume at the entrance upon the doctrine of real estates. That great branch of the law forms a system by itself, and, together with a general Index to the whole work, will afford ample materials for another volume; and I consider myself as being under an engagement to that portion of the public who have hitherto patronized my labours, to prepare it for the press with reasonable diligence.

New-York, October 10th, 1828.
