VARIETIES IN PROPORTION.

Sect. I. INSURANCE.

INSURANCE is a contract, whereby one party engages to pay the loffes which the other may fuftain, for a ftipulated premium, which varies according to the risk. The parties who engage to pay the damage, are called the Infurers or Underwriters; and the parties for whofe fecurity they engage, are called the Infured.

POLICY is the writ fpecifying the conditions agreed upon be tween the underwriters and the infured. It is an ufual article in the policy, that in cafe of lofs, the underwriters are to be allowed a fmall discount or abatement, which is generally 2 per cent.; in this cafe the infured receives only L.98 for the L. 100, and this L.98 is called the SHORT RECOVERY.

COVERING PROPERTY, or covering the Out-fet, is when the value of the cargo, with the premium and discount, are alfo infured, and although infurances for a greater fum than the infured had really at risk, be contrary to law, yet fome latitude is allowed in this refpect; for if the owner were to infure no more than the exact value of his property, he would lose the premium of infurance, and the abatement, if any was agreed on.

ift, To find the premium, work by the rule in COMMISSION. Or, when the rate is given in guineas, we may add part to the fum before we calculate for the pounds; or we may calculate for the pounds, and add part to the answer.

2d, To find the short recovery, fubtract the discount from L. 100. As 100 is to the remainder, fo is the fum to the fhort recovery; or work by aliquot parts.

Ex. What is the fhort recovery of L.1250; difcount 2 per cent.? 100: 98: 1250: L.1225 or

L.1225 fhort recovery.

3d, To find how much fhould be infured to cover any fum, fubtract the amount of the premium and difcount (if any) from L.100. As the remainder is to L. 100, fo is the value, to the fum which covers it.

Ex What fum must be insured to cover L.180, premium 8 per cent. abatement 2 per cent.

4th, If a voyage be infured out and home, the premium outward must be confidered as part of the value on the homeward property, and the fum neceffary to cover it computed accordingly.

Ex. To infure L. 180 out and home, at 8 per cent. each voyage, abatement 2 per cent.; compute thus:

90: 100: L.180: L.200, to be infured outward, premium on L.200 outwards at 8 per cent. is L.16.

90: 100: L.196: L.217: 15: 6 Anf.; fum to be infured home; the premium on which is L.17: 8:5; and if the ship be loft on the homeward voyage, from the fum insured
