THE SONG OF THE SPIRIT OF HIRAM; AND OTHER POEMS. BY RICHARD GOOCH, OF ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE. the hour shall come "When all these splendours bursting on my sight ANNA LETITIA AIKIN. LONDON: PUBLISHED BY J. HEARNE, 81, STRAND. MDCCCXXXII PREFACE. G25 R4 THESE Poems are, in all likelihood, the last their author will intrude upon the world. They are published with a considerable degree of diffidence as to their literary pretension, though by the advice of a friend, a highly-gifted and successful writer. He has not, however, been without some previous assurance of capability. For when, anxious to ascertain if he possessed any power as a writer of poetry, a portion of them, together with some other pieces, not included in this volume, were submitted to the late eminent Critic, the writer of the Baviad and Mæviad, for his opinion, the encouraging remark "Let him go on; there's genius." A similar meed of approbation was, at the same time, awarded him by the late elegant and profound Italian scholar, Ugo Foscolo. That he has not before made his debût as a writer of poetry, may be attributed to the indifferent degree of patronage of late extended to aspirants in this seductive class of literature.
