APPLICATION AND USE OF FRACTIONS. 139

6. A man had 6 lots of land, each containing How much did they all contain? Acres 46-5+185; ac.=.

37 acres.

7. Divide 1719 by 147.

1,185 Ans.

8. Nine pieces of cloth contained 13642 yards, from which there had been sold 29,92%; what was the average quantity each piece contained of the remainder? 13—24,863=Ans.

9. What is the value of ,857 of a day?

Ans. 20h. 34m. 4s.

10. What is the value of ,75 of a year?

11. Multiply 68 by 51.

Ans. 273d. 18h.

93,844 x 4,001=Ans.

12. Divide 26 by 21. 70+7+,5 Ans.

13. If a pile of wood be 18 feet long, 11 wide, and 7 high; how many cords does it contain? 25 cords 8ft.+2+,25

Ans.

NOTE. A cord of wood is 128 solid feet; the proportions commonly assigned are, 8 feet in length, 4 in breadth, and 4 in height. The contents of a pile of any dimensions may be found by multiplying the length, breadth, and height into each other. The last product divided by 128 will show the number of cords, the remainder, if any, will be so many solid feet. It is usual, however, to divide the cord into 8 parts, each part containing 16 cubic feet; thus we say, 8 feet instead of 1 cord-9 feet instead of 1 cord and 16 cubic feet.

16. In a block of marble 47 feet long, 24 feet thick, and 2 feet wide, how many cubic feet and inches? 27,3 nearly. Ans.

SIMPLE INTEREST.

INTEREST is an allowance or compensation given by the bor

What is Inter- rower to the lender for the use of money or any thing else obtained, agreed on by the parties. This compensation is established by law, at what is called 6 per cent: that is, 6 dollars for the use of 100 for 1 year.

What compensation is allowed by law for the use of 100 dollars for 1 year?

What is the

There are various methods of casting Interest; but, perhaps no one method is best in all cases; therefore,

To what part of the principal is the interest equal to, at 6 per cent?

The reason is, that at 6 per cent the interest is equal to Too of the principal, and the principal divided by 100 will give a quotient equal to Too of it, or 1 per cent; 2 per cent must be twice as much; 6 per cent must be six times as much; by multiplying first and dividing afterwards will prevent any trouble which would result from fractions left by dividing first.

What is the interest of $2600 for 16 months,

$208,00 Ans. Int. for 16 months.

Rule 2d. Multiply the principal by half the number of months, and divide the product by 100, or cut off the figures as in Rule 1st.

The reason is, that the interest of money, at 6 per cent, is equal too of the principal for every two months; therefore, 6 months must be

equal to 3 times

of the principal, because 6

months is 3 times 2 months, and 12 months must

be equal to 6 times

EXAMPLE.

terest, by allowing a cent per month, for every dollar of the principal.

The reason is evident, that if 100 dollars in 12 months would give 6 dollars, or 600 cents interest, that one dollar must give 6 cents, or 12 half cents for 12 months.

What is the interest of $2600 for 1 year and 4 months?
