NOTE. When partial payments have been made, compute the interest on the principal, from the time when the interest commenced to the time when a payment was made, and add that interest to the principal, and from the sum subtract the payment made at that time, and the remainder forms a new principal; on which compute and subtract the interest, as upon the first principal.

Peter Trusty gave his note to Simon Magus, Jan. 1st, 1820, to pay him 500 dollars, Sept. 1st, 1821, he paid $125,25; and 6 months after, he paid up the interest due, and 25 dollars of the principal. Here from the last number 100 given, I discover the number sought is 99, after being multiplied by 2, by, and by respectively, or by 2, (the sum of these multipliers;) we have therefore the product, 99 given, and the multiplier 2 to find the multiplicand.

138. A merchant would lay out in spices £560, viz. cloves at 4 shillings per pound; mace at 7s.; cinnamon at 3s.; and nutmegs at 2s. and he would have an equal quantity of each sort. I demand the quantity.
