RECOMMENDATIONS.

"At a meeting of the inhabitants of Newton, on Monday, the 12th of May, 1828, it was voted unanimously, That we highly approve of the Pupil's Arithmetic, by Seth Davis, Esq. now in use in our public schools; think it a work happily arranged for the purpose, and are convinced that it has already had a salutary effect in aiding many of our youth in acquiring a knowledge of the science."

Mr. S. Davis,

Dear Sir,-A cursory examination of your Pupil's Arithmetic, while in sheets, so far convinced me of its superior merits, that I was induced to introduce it into my school soon after it was issued from the press; and have found, by a year's experiment, that it was compiled, as all schoolbooks should be, from the result of actual experiment in the schoolroom. It is entirely a practical work; and some of its principal excellencies are, its combining mental and written Arithmetic, upon the inductive plan, which has, hitherto been a desideratum, and the omission of answers, which has a direct tendency to learn scholars to think, without which, little can be effected in education. I hope the next edition will be enlarged. It is now in use, by order of the Committee, in all the public schools in this town. Respectfully, yours, &c. JONAS WILDER, Master of one of the Public Schools in Watertown.

Watertown, Aug. 1, 1828.

FROM THE REV. MR. WHITMAN.

Waltham, Jan. 18, 1830.

Mr. Davis,

My dear Sir, I am rejoiced to hear that the public has called for a second edition of your excellent Arithmetic. When the first edition appeared, I examined it carefully, and was very favourably impressed with its merits. Soon after, I visited your school, and witnessed an examination of your pupils, in this branch of education; and I must say, that in all the schools I have myself kept, and in all I have visited, I have never seen so great proficiency, accuracy, and facility in the use of figures, by scholars of the same age and advantages. My confidence was therefore increased, not merely in your method of instruction, but in your text book, which combines the excellencies of both mental and written Arithmetic, as well as furnishes much useful information in the questions. I can cordially recommend your work to public patronage; and I sincerely hope you may be amply remunerated for your trouble, as well as gratified in beholding its increased and increasing circulation.

Yours sincerely,

BERNARD WHITMAN.

How is it u

sual to express numbers?

Instead of writing the names of numbers, it is usual to express them by particular characters, called figures.

When numbers are to be added, which How do you are expressed by figures, the numset down numbers must be set down directly under bers when they each other. Draw a line underneath, are expressed by and begin at the bottom, and reckon upfigures? wards, and set down the amount directly underneath.

EXAMPLE.

1. John has three apples, Peter three, and William two.

How many have they all got?

John has 3

Peter 3
