When the divisor can be obtained more than 9 times in the dividend, you must take figures enough on the left hand of the dividend to contain the divisor not less than once, nor more than nine times; and perform the operation exactly as though that part of the dividend were the whole of it; after you have subtracted in the usual manner, bring down the next figure to the right hand of the remainder, then divide the number it makes in the same manner as in the first instance, and continue to bring down each figure to the several remainders, until they are all brought down.

How do you prove a sum in Division?

To prove a sum in Division, multiply the quotient and divisor together, and add the remainder, if any, to the product. If the work be right, the amount will be equal to the dividend.

The scholar should prove every sum until he is thoroughly acquainted with his Arith

metick.
