To the Fifth Auditor, also, has been assigned the duties of Commissioner of the Revenue, which are considerable, embracing a Superintendence of the Light House Establishment, and a correspondence with, and superintendence over, the Collectors of the Direct Tax and Internal Revenue, (there being originally 199,) who, though comparatively, have but a small amount to collect, have the same routine of duty to perform in making monthly and quarterly returns as they had originally. By an Act of the 10th of February, 1820, it is made the duty of the Register, of the Treasury to prepare Satistical Accounts of the Commerce of the Register and Clerks. United States, to be laid before the Congress. These accounts are made up from the quarterly returns of the Collectors of the Customs, and exhibit, in a very accurate manner, the foreign commerce of the United States.
