19 The girls' school is very creditably managed by the present mistress. The boys' school is in a backward and inefficient state.

28 The boys' school is improved in respect of the quality of the instruction given. The girls' school is backward, but in both the industrial training is very creditably managed.

26 These schools are very fairly instructed, and the various useful industrial occupations in which the children are employed are particularly deserving of favourable mention.

71 Both schools are well managed; the girls' school especially promises better than at any former inspection. I could wish to see some garden work provided for the boys.

20 The girls' school is in very fair order in all points. The boys' school is not in an equally efficient

state.

16 These schools, conducted on the mixed principle, appear to me very fairly to answer the objects of a Workhouse school.

24 The girls' school is considerably improved since my last visit. The boys' school is fairly managed, and their industrial training well attended

to.

3 These children have been hitherto instructed in the National school, which appears to be well conducted.

8 The boys' school is improving, but in a low intellectual condition compared with the average of Workhouse schools. The girls' school is conducted so as to turn out good servants, a criteterion of good management.

11 15 The girls' school is improved since my last visit. The boys' school, deteriorated for a time, owing to the want of a master; but on my second visit, a master having been appointed, great improvement was perceptible.

General Observations on Discipline, Instruction, &c.

20 The girls' school is very creditably conducted. The boys' school is in a much less efficient state.

11 This school is very well managed in all respects. The boys go to the National school.

5 These schools are as fairly conducted in all respects as such small ones can be.

22 These schools are now, as I have remarked at all former inspections, very creditably managed, but the boys' department would be improved if the children were allowed to cultivate some land.

19 The condition of these schools is equal to the average of pauper establishments.

10 These schools are fairly managed, no change being perceptible since my previous examination.

41 I cannot record a favourable opinion of these schools, though the industry seems fairly attended to. On a second visit, however, considerable improvement was visible.

19 The boys' school is, as I have always found it in this house, in excellent order and intelligently taught. The girls' school is in a much less efficient condition.

8 These schools have so declined in numbers, with the declension of pauperism, that there are not enough children to form separate classes. The management is satisfactory.

10 The boys' school is slightly improved since my previous visit, but the instruction does not reach a high standard. The girls' school is fairly managed.

18 These schools are creditably managed, and superior to what they were at my previous examination.

8 The great decrease of numbers has deteriorated these schools, but they are altogether very fairly managed.

23 I cannot record a favourable opinion of the progress of the children in either boys' or girls' school. In both, the instruction is defective or inefficient.

38 53 The boys' school is in very good order, and efficiently instructed; the girls' school, possibly owing to the illness of the mistress, is in a very backward state.

35 24 The boys' school has been much injured by frequent changes of master. The girls' school is fairly managed.

31 The schools in this workhouse appear to answer the purpose of their institution, as the children are rapidly taken into service, when fitted, and keep their places.

26 The schools in this workhouse are fairly managed, and appear fully to discharge the great objects. in educating this class of children, by turning out honest and diligent workpeople.

20 These schools are very fairly instructed in all ordinary subjects, and the girls' school especially is improved since the last examination.

38 The boys' school is considerably improved since my last visit, and is now in a satisfactory condition. The girls' school is in a much less advanced state.

38 The boys' school is in a fair average condition, but geography is not adequately_taught. The girls' school is less efficient than the boys.

38 The boys' school is very well conducted, though there is a want of proper industrial training. The girls' school is not in any way changed since my last visit.

95 The girls' school is fairly managed, and the industrial work remarkably well attended to; the children easily get into service, and keep their places. The boys' school has much deteriorated since my examination in the previous year, but was improving at my second visit.

72 These schools are very well managed, both in the boys' and girls' department. The appointment of a pupil-teacher has improved the boys' school.

18 The boys, at my last visit, did not appear to have been efficiently iustructed. The girls' school is fairly managed, especially in the industrial department.

42 The girls' school is slowly improving, but the boys' school deteriorated, owing to the children having been taken away from the school to perform household work, rendered necessary by the absence of able men in the house.

26 The boys' school is considerably improved since my visit previously. The girls' school is in a much less advanced state.

49 These schools are intelligently managed in all respects, and the industrial training of the boys especially has been much improved since my last visit, by giving them a field to cultivate.

33 These schools are as fairly managed as they can be, considering the amount of labour now necessarily imposed on the children, in consequence of the few able-bodied men in the house.

The girls' school is improved since last year, and is creditably managed by the present mistress. The small size of the boys' school, and the low ages of the children, prevent its making as efficient an appearance as previously.

43 The boys' school is improved since my preceding visit, the children being now kept a proper time in school. The girls' school is improving, but backward.

44 The boys' school is improved since my last visit; both it and the giris' school are distinguished by good writing.

36 The boys' school is now very creditably managed in an industrial point of view, and hence improved. The girls' school is moderately well conducted.

10 These schools are not efficiently conducted.

62 The boys' school is well and intelligently managed, the children passing a very fair examination. The girls' school shows great deficiencies.

13 These schools are fairly managed, but the small number of the children impedes any great ad

vance.

16 This is a mixed school, taught by a master and mistress. The children passed a very good examination, and the boys' department is improved since my last visit as respects the industrial training.

33 The boys' school passed a fair examination, and was in good order, but deficient in arithmetical knowledge. The girls' school is improved under the present mistress.

42 These schools are very fairly conducted; and the boys' school promises to improve considerably.

52 The girls' school is improved and well managed, both morally and industrially. The boys' school is tolerably managed, but not in so efficient a state as the girls' school.

13 The girls' school bears the marks, as at all my former examinations, of careful attention and efficient instruction. The boys' school is also intelligently instructed.

42 The boys' school has been very much improved under the present master, and promises to become a most efficient place of instruction. The girls' school is in a fair condition.

21 I cannot record a very favourable opinion of the intellectual progress in these schools, but the boys are well trained in industrial work, well calculated to fit them for their future situations.

16 This school has been conducted on the mixed system since my last visit, and thereby, in my opinion, improved. Both sexes are efficiently taught by a mistress.

4 This is a mixed school, taught by a master. The quality of the instruction imparted is much improved since my last visit.

13 The children are too few in this workhouse to admit of a good school.

10 The girls' school is very fairly conducted; but the boys' school, though somewhat improved, is not in an advanced state.

33 The boys' school is fairly managed, and improved since my last visit. The girls' school presents no change.
