MALE AND FEMALE CANDIDATES.

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY.

(Three hours allowed for this paper.)

All candidates must draw a map, and answer Question 8. They may answer four other questions in each of the two subjects.

GEOGRAPHY.

1. Draw an outline map, with meridians and parallels if you can, noting thereon the principal physical features only, of (a) Ireland; or, (b) Italy; or, (c) Australia.

2. Explain the following terms: meridian of Greenwich, equatorial diameter, ecliptic, solstice, estuary, confluence, and plateau.

3. Describe briefly, in words, the courses of the Ganges

and the Nile.

4. Describe the situation of Glasgow, Limerick, Belfast, Swansea, Yarmouth, Dundee, and Newcastle, and state the industries specially associated with each of them.

5. Describe a coasting voyage from Bordeaux to Naples, stopping at six important seaports on the way, and name the principal exports from each of these ports.

6. Give some account of the Soudan, Manitoba, and Ceylon.

7. Enumerate the chief productions of British North America, Queensland, and Jamaica.

HISTORY.

8. Arrange in chronological order, and give the dates, of the following events :-The discovery of America; the battles of the Nile, Flodden, Bannockburn, and Marston Moor; the accession of Stephen, Anne, and Elizabeth; the act of Habeas Corpus and of Slave Emancipation; the death of Becket, of Charles I., and Simon de Montfort.

9. Explain the term "the making of England," and give some account of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Wessex.

10. Explain the terms alderman, Magna Charta, feudal system, viceroy.

11. Write a brief account of the reign of Henry VIII., illustrating especially the despotic character of his reign. 12. Trace the descent of James I. from Henry VII., and of George I. from James I.

13. Write short accounts of Raleigh, Hampden, and Falkland.

14. Point out the great political changes introduced by the Revolution of 1688, and sketch the character of William III.

15. Name, with dates, the chief events of the latter half of the eighteenth century.

16. What great changes have been made in the representation of the people in Parliament during the present century?

MUSIC.

(Three hours allowed for this and the School Management

Paper.)

Candidates

The Tonic Sol-fa questions are on the other side. must keep entirely to one set of questions or the other. They are not permitted to answer more than FOUR questions.

STAFF NOTATION,

1. Write the pitch names (C, B, or Do, Si, &c.) and the duration names (Crotchet, Minim, &c.) of the following notes, and write the signs for rests of corresponding value.

2. Describe the intervals (major third, etc.) formed by the following pairs of notes.

3. Write the scale of E-flat major.

4. Write the time signatures (s, etc.) of the following.

5. Write any form of the scale of B minor, ascending and descending.

6. Explain the following terms :—

(1) Da capo. (2) Andante. (3) Crescendo.
(4) Ritard.

TONIC SOL-FA NOTATION.

1. Re-write the following:-(1) halving the value of every note, and (2) again doubling the value of every note.

3. Describe the mental effect (1) of Fah, (2) of Te, (3)

of Me.

4. Write the signs (1) for three-pulse measure, (2) fourpulse measure, (3) six-pulse measure. The pulses need not be filled with notes.

5. Name (1) the minor sixth and (2) the major seventh of the Lah or minor mode.

6. Explain the following terms:

(1) Da capo. (2) Andante. (3) Crescendo.
(4) Ritard.

Directions for the Examination, by the Musical Instructor of each College, of Candidates in Practical Skill.

1. Each Candidate is to be examined separately. Not more than three Candidates at a time should be admitted to the room in which the examination is conducted.

2. Successive Candidates should not be tested with the same passages.

3. If a pianoforte is used for the EAR TESTS, the Examiner will take care that the Candidate under examination is out of sight of the keys.

4. The staff notation tests will be found equally applicable to the system of "movable Do." A complete set of tests under the tonic sol-fa system is given separately. Candidates should have equal credit for skill in either notation.

5. The musical capacity of Candidates unable to sing from notation can be determined by their power to imitate correctly some of the passages of the EAR TESTS sung or played to them by the Examiner.

6. In classifying Candidates, credit should be given for readiness as well as for accuracy.

7. Candidates may sing from the printed copy of the tests. For this purpose six copies are forwarded.
