Praise him for all the mighty acts,
Which he in our behalf hath done;
His kindness this return exacts,

With which our praise should equal run. Ye who the breath of life enjoy, That breath he does to you afford, In just returns of praise employ: Let ev'ry creature praise the Lord. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heav'n and earth adore; Be glory, as it was of old,

Is now, and shall be evermore.

HYMNS

FOR PARTICULAR OCCASIONS.

Advent.

HYMN I.-P. M.)

HOSANNA to the living Lord! Hosanna to th' Incarnate Word! To Christ, Creator, Saviour, King, Let earth, let heaven, Hosanna sing! Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna, Lord! thine angels cry; Hosanna, Lord! thy saints reply; Above, beneath us, and around, The dead and living swell the sound. Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest! O Saviour! with protecting care, Return to this thy house of prayer: Assembled in thy sacred name,

We here thy parting promise claim! Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest! But, chiefest, in our cleansed breast, Bid thine eternal Spirit rest,

And make our secret soul to be

A temple pure, and worthy thee!

Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

So in the last and dreadful day, When earth and heav'n shall melt away, Thy flock, redeem'd from sinful stain, Shall swell the sound of praise again. Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

HYMN II.-(C. M.)

HARK, the glad sound! the Saviour comes,
The Saviour promis'd long!
Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne,
And ev'ry voice a song.

He comes, the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before Him break,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes to bind the broken heart,
To make the wounded whole:
To preach glad tidings to the meek,
And bless the humble soul.

Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thine advent shall proclaim,
And heav'n's exalted arch resounds
Thine everlasting name.

HYMN III.-(P. M.)

GREAT God, what do I see and hear,
The end of things created,
The Judge of mankind does appear
On clouds of glory seated;

The trumpet sounds, the graves restore
The dead which they contain'd before;
Prepare my soul to meet him!

I see the dead in Christ arise,
At the last trumpet's sounding;
Caught up to meet him in the skies,
With joy their Lord surrounding;
No gloomy fears their souls dismay,
His presence sheds eternal day,

On those prepar'd to meet him!
Great God, what do I see and hear, &c.

HYMN IV. (L. M.)

THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,
The hills their ancient seat forsake,
And, fading from the vault of night
The stars withdraw their feeble light.
The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form he came--
A silent lamb, to slaughter led,

The bruis'd, the suff'ring, and the dead:
The Lord will come! a dreadful form,
With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human-kind.

Can this be He, who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,
By power oppress'd, and mock'd by pride?
O God! is this the Crucified?

While sinners to the rocks complain,
And seek the mountain's cleft in vain!
Then faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy-The Lord is come!

HYMN V. (L. M.)

THE day of wrath, that dreadful day
When heav'n and earth shall pass away!
What pow'r shall be the sinner's stay?
How shall he meet that dreadful day?
When shriv❜lling like a parched scroll,
The flaming heav'ns together roll,
And louder yet, and yet more dread,
Swells the high trump that wakes the dead?
O! on that day, that wrathful day,
When man to judgment wakes from clay,
Be Thou the trembling sinner's stay,
Though heav'n and earth shall pass away.
Christmas Day.

HYMN VI.-(P. M.)

HARK! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King;
"Glory in the highest heav'n,
"Peace on earth, and man forgiv'n."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise!
Join the triumphs of the skies!
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
Veil'd in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail the incarnate Deity!

Pleas'd as man with men to dwell;
Jesus our Immanuel.

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and Life to all he brings,
Ris'n with healing in his wings.
