WHEWELL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL

LAW.

THE Rev. William Whewell, D.D., late Master of Trinity College, made provision by his will for the establishment of Scholarships in the University, to be awarded for proficiency in the subject of International Law.

The Scholarships are to be eight in number, tenable for four years under conditions of residence, which may be dispensed with by express permission of the Master and Senior Fellows of Trinity College: but no Scholar holding a diplomatic or consular appointment under the Crown is required to reside.

Two Scholars are to be chosen every year at some time before the commencement of Michaelmas Term, one of whom shall receive an annual payment of £100, and the other an annual payment of £50.

The Electors are the same as for the Professorship of International Law.

All persons under the age of twenty-five are eligible to these Scholarships; but no one who has once gained a Scholarship is allowed to be a candidate a second time. Every person elected, if not already a member of some College in Cambridge, is required to become a member of Trinity College.

WADDINGTON SCHOLARSHIP.

MISS WADDINGTON and MISS CLARA WADDINGTON having offered to the University a sum of £3000 in three per cent. consolidated Bank Annuities for the purpose of founding a Classical Scholarship in the University, to be called the Waddington Scholarship, in memory of their brothers, the late Very Rev. George Waddington, D.D., Dean of Durham, formerly Davies University Scholar, and the late Right Honourable Horatio Waddington, M.A., formerly Pitt University Scholar, the following Regulations for the Scholarship have been suggested and have received the sanction of the Misses Waddington.

The Scholar is to receive by way of stipend the whole of the annual dividends and income of the above-named sum, subject to the payment thereout of necessary expenses (if any).

Any Undergraduate of not more than three years' standing from the time of his first residence is eligible for this Scholarship, which is tenable for five years if the Scholar shall continue a member of the University, but it is not tenable with a Craven, nor with the Battie, Brown, Davies, Pitt, or Porson Scholarships.

The Electors shall be the Vice-Chancellor, the Public Orator, the Regius Professor of Greek, and two members of the Senate appointed by Grace of the Senate at the last Congregation in November after the vacancy has been declared, provided that, in case any of the ex officio Electors be prevented from taking part in the Examination, a deputy shall be appointed in each case by Grace of the Senate.

The Examination for the Scholarship is to be exclusively Classical, and begins on the Monday after the last Saturday but one in the January following the declaration of a vacancy.

LUMLEY EXHIBITIONS.

THE Right Honourable ELIZABETH, Viscountess LUMLEY, by a deed bearing date October 8, 1657, directed certain Trustees therein named, to pay and allow yearly to ten poor Scholars of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, educated in the School founded by her at Thornton in the county of York, or in default of such, to any other poor Scholars, not exceeding ten in number (subsequently reduced to five), who should be nominated thereto by the respective Convocations of the said Universities for the time being, the sum of £4 a year each, to be continued until they should have time to become graduates in one of the said Universities.

By an Order of the Court of Chancery, issued in the year 1820, it was directed that, in consequence of the increased rents these five Exhibitions should in future be £15 per annum each, and that the rents not called for should accumulate.
