TABULATED Reports, in detail, for 1851-2, on Schools inspected by Her Majesty's Inspector of Schools, Rev. H. W. BELLAIRS.

[blocks in formation]

1851. 1. Eaton Bishop,

Mixed - 3 Nov. 69

67

Mixed under mistress and monitor. A very nice promising school. The mistress is untrained, but successful

as a teacher, energetic and painstaking. The discipline and instruction good. The children purchase their own books. The school hours are from ten to three, half an hour allowed for dinner; this plan is said to work well. 301 books sold to the children during the last fifteen months, money paid for them 4l.

2. Kington, Boys and

Girls

4 Nov.

The general condition of this school is very bad. No member of the committee met me.

3. Dilwyn,

3. Mixed, under master, mistress, and one pupil-teacher. 4. Fair, but the children not sufficiently trustworthy.

5. Not sufficiently skilful; the defects in the school attributable to this. 6. The master and mistress are untrained, imperfectly educated, and deficient in professional skill, but painstaking and diligent. The children only just returned from harvesting. The school is improved.

4. Hereford, Boys

55 Conducted by a master and monitor. Organization and classification imperfect. The attainments of the

children in religious and secular knowledge very imperfect. Their intelligence very low; irregularity of attendance is pleaded in extenuation, but this will not excuse the present most unsatisfactory condition of the school, which is mainly attributable to the deficiencies or neglect of the master. The moral tone is very

low; the boys dirty and not trustworthy. 55 I was unable to examine the girls very fully, but so far as the examination went was pleased with them.

There are some points in the junior classes in which improvement might be introduced." The children are very clean, tidy, and well behaved.

36 Boys and girls classed separately in same room, under master, mistress, and monitor. Discipline fnir. 30 Methods, intelligence, and attainments moderate. The master has misconducted himself, and is under

notice to quit; the mistress appears to be a nice person with good tone and earnest in her work.

[blocks in formation]

2. Sufficient. 3. Boys under master and one pupil-teacher. 4. Fair, 5. Good. 6. Appears to have discharged

his duties faithfully and efficiently. There were forty-eight boys present, irregularly classified. The intellectual work is confined to an hour daily. No satisfactory report on their intellectual attainments can be made. The master, I imagine, is

qualified to carry out à fair system of instruction; vide remarks on industrial report. 1 and 2. Sufficient. 3. Mixed, under mistress and monitor. 4. Good. 5. Fair. 6. A quiet gentle person,

1 and 2. Sufficient. 3. Infants, under mistress, two pupil-teachers, and monitor. 4 and 5. Satisfactory.

6. Trained at Cheltenham; appears to be diligent in the discharge of her duties; has been here three weeks.
7. The examination of this school was postponed in consequence of the illness of the mistress and pupil.
teacher, the one with typhus fever, the other with smallpox. The late mistress was invalided for some
months before she left, which caused a considerable decrease in the attendance.
Infants, under mistress and monitor. Discipline and instruction good. Mistress diligent and efficient.

Children very clean and tidy.
Boys in four classes, under master and monitor. Discipline generally good; dirty hands. Methods generally

fair. Some improvement might be made in reading; there is a want of intelligent religious knowledge in junior classes. Master apparently diligent and successful in his management and teaching. There is a deficiency of secular reading-books, and of efficient agency in junior classes.
