knowledge fairish: arithmetic fair. Singing from notes good.

The third and fourth classes passed a satisfactory examination.

A slight improvement has taken place in arithmetic.

78 120 Three pupil-teachers were apprenticed in this school, but no proportionate results have been obtained from
the extra assistance thus afforded to the master. I cannot record any favourable impression of the school.
It is very strange that in a large place like this funds cannot be raised by the inhabitants alone towards
providing suitable school-rooms and efficient means of instruction.

64 180 In eight classes, under a certificated master and four pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge good; spelling and arithmetic good; English history very fair; geography good; reading and writing fair. Second class, spelling and geography fair; arithmetic moderate; the children in this class are very irregular in their attendance, great pains have therefore been very properly bestowed upon them. Third class, religious knowledge good; arithmetic fair; answered intelligently in other respects; should improve in knowledge of grammar; half the class spelled fairly. Fourth class, religious knowledge fair; could write figures correctly from dietation, but rather deficient in the correct working of the sums; geography fair; answered intelligently from the reading lesson; should improve in spelling. Fifth and sixth classes read easy narrative, and work sums in simple subtraction and addition. The seventh and eight classes are taught in a class-room chiefly on the simultaneous system; singing from notes very good. 24 114 In six classes, under a mistress and three pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge good; reading fair; geography good; arithmetic fairish; writing and English history very fair. Second class, geography fair; in other respects the result of the examination was not satisfactory; they were not examined as to their Scriptural knowledge. Third class, religious knowledge good; writing on slates moderate; spelling better than that of the second class; should improve in arithmetic. Fourth class, religious knowledge fair; could write figures from dictation, but should improve in the working of the sums. The remaining classes are taught in the class-room.

In six classes, under a master and four pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge good; reading improved; geography good; spelling and grammar fair; arithmetic moderate; writing fair. Second class, religious knowledge fair; spelling and geography fair; arithmetic improved and also reading. Third class, arithmetic improved; spelling and grammar moderate; some answered fairly in geography; reading moderate. Fourth class, reading fair; writing on slates fair; can work sums in simple subtraction; fair knowledge of the geography of England; religious knowledge fair; class brisk and attentive during examination; singing very fair. School improved since preceding inspection. A new school-room is greatly needed; the present one is much too small for the numbers in attendance. The ventilation is bad, in fact there is scarcely any. The room used as a class-room is wholly unsuitable for the purpose.

99 155 In seven classes, under a master (certificated) and four pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge fair; geography and grammar fair; spelling fair; reading fairish; should improve in arithmetic. Second class, religious knowledge fairish; geography fair; should improve in reading and arithmetic. Third class, religious knowledge fair; geography good; arithmetic fair; grammar failure. Fourth class, writing on slates and spelling fair; fair knowledge of geography and Palestine; arithmetic fair. Fifth class can multiply tolerably correctly by one figure; read easy narrative; geography fair. Sixth and seventh classes are taught in turns by the pupil-teachers; very few of these children have passed through the infant school. The discipline of the school is not what it should be; the classes are dismissed in a disorderly way. The first and second classes should improve in arithmetic.

The regular mistress of this school is in training at the Home and Colonial Institution. There are two apprentices.

A large and airy school-room has recently been built. The school is increasing in efficiency under a certificated mistress. This school will, I trust, be a valuable auxiliary to the boys and girls.

12 90 In six classes, under a master and monitors. First class, religious knowledge fair; spelling and geography fair; arithmetic moderate, particularly the girls. Second class, fair knowledge of the geography of England; should improve in arithmetic and spelling. Third class, religious knowledge fair; should improve in arithmetic. Upon the whole the school has made progress.

A new master has been appointed, who, I hope, may improve his school.

This school is in precisely the same inefficient state, from which scarcely any efforts have ever been made to

raise it.

LEICESTERSHIRE.

First class, religious knowledge fair; arithmetic fair as far as compound rules, two boys could work sums in
fractions; spelling and writing moderate; this class was not examined in geography or grammar. Second
class, religious knowledge fair; spelling bad; reading moderate; deficient in writing numbers from dic-
tation; some knowledge of the geography of England. Third class, reading poor; deficient in arithmetic.
Fourth class consisted of little boys, who, considering the time they had been at school, ought to have made
greater progress in reading.

This is a mixed school of girls and infants. I cannot report favourably of the attainments of the children in
any subject in which they had been instructed.

First class, religious knowledge fair; spelling and grammar moderate; geography very fair: good knowledge of their own county; English history not much. Second class, religious knowledge very fair; read easy

The children are taught to sing from notes.

The school is conducted by a mistress who has her certificate. When the age of the children is taken into consideration, and the short time they remain under instruction in consequence of the great demand for them to seam stockings, the result of the examination was satisfactory.

In four classes, under a master who has his certificate, and two pupil-teachers. First class, religious know-
ledge very fair; reading fairish; geography good, but the girls were deficient; arithmetic moderate. Second
class, arithmetic fairish, but should improve in setting down figures from dictation; geography fair. Third
class could multiply numbers by one figure, and with figures from dictation. Fourth class, little ones,
answered fairly. The master has been diligent in his school, which upon the whole is certainly improved,
and I hope will continue to do so.

17 June 135 128 109 138 In four classes, under a certificated master and three pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge fair;
arithmetic fair, as far as compound rules and reduction; grammar and geography moderate; should improve
in spelling. Second class read easy narrative, and can work sums in simple multiplication by one figure;
writing and spelling moderate; some knowledge of the geography of Leicestershire. Third class can work
sums in simple addition. Fourth and fifth classes consist of little ones. The school has slightly improved
since last inspection; the attendance of the children is very irregular and fluctuating.

A new mistress has been appointed who was trained at Whitelands, and has passed her examination for her certificate. The school is improved.

21 June 222 110 240 235 In eight classes, under a master who has his certificate, and four pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge fair; arithmetic pretty fair; spelling, grammar, and geography fair. Second class, geography fair; should improve in spelling and arithmetic, and speak louder when reading. Third class, fair knowledge of geography. Fourth class, religious knowledge fair; should improve in writing figures from dictation. The rest of the school consisted of four classes, and was composed of children the greater part of whom had only recently been admitted. The influx of the children during the year has been very great. School improved since preceding inspection. The school has been entirely re-organized during the past year; the children, the greater part of whom have been recently admitted, were remarkably quiet and orderly, without any appearance of constraint during the examination. The mistress exercises great influence over her school, which promises well.

In four classes, under a mistress who has passed her examination for certificate; she has only been six months in charge.

20 30 60 In four classes, under a master and two pupil-teachers. First class, religious knowledge fair; reading and spelling fair; grammar as far as parts of speech; arithmetic moderate; geography and writing on slates fair. Second class, four answered fairly in Holy Scripture; arithmetic, geography, and spelling moderate. Third class could write down numbers correctly as far as thousands, but deficient in correct working of sums. Fourth class, little ones. This school has been under disadvantages in consequence of a change of masters; these circumstances being considered, the result of the examination was as satisfactory as could be expected.

A new mistress has been appointed (certificated). The religious knowledge of the children is very fair. The lower classes should improve in arithmetic. The mistress has not been long in charge; when she came the school was not in an efficient state.

47 In five classes, under a master who has his certificate. First class, three answered well in Holy Scripture;
arithmetic moderate; some knowledge of geography of England. Second class, religious knowledge fair;
reading very fair. Third, fourth, and fifth classes intelligently taught. This school is in an improving
state, and presented a very different appearance to what it did at a preceding inspection.

five did very well in spelling, arithmetic, and writing, the rest of this class answered very fairly; English
history moderate; geography very fair; not examined in grammar; reading fair. This class was examined
on paper which, of course, was a severe test. Second class, religious knowledge very fair; spelling fair;
geography good; grammar moderate; arithmetic considerably improved. Third class, religious knowledge
fair; geography very fair; arithmetic fairish. Fourth class read easy narrative fairly, should improve in
arithmetic, in other respects answered fairly. Fifth class, intelligently taught. School considerably
improved since last inspection.
A new mistress has been appointed. An improvement has taken place since the last inspection, and the
school seems likely to do well. Both the boys and girls school-rooms have been entirely refitted and
re-arranged.

In three classes, under a master, who has passed his examination for certificate, and one pupil-teacher. A
slight improvement has taken place since the preceding inspection. The master has taken great pains in
teaching the children to sing from notes, and in this he has been more successful than in anything else.
The attainments of the children are moderate; they should improve in arithmetic and spelling. A few in the
first class answered nicely when questioned in Holy Scripture.

In three classes, under a master. First class, religious knowledge very fair; all worked correctly a sum in
reduction, and one boy in fractions; spelling fair; geography not much. Second class should improve
in spelling and geography. Third class work sums in simple addition. Several boys in the Sunday school
and two or three in the day school have garden allotments, ench about forty square yards, for which they
bay a small rent yearly to the clergyman.
