SYLLABUS OF LECTURES.

LATIN (PROFESSOR H. ARNOLD TALBOT-TUBBS).

The following courses will be delivered during the session:

Translation.-Lectures on the prescribed books:-Cæsar, B.G., Book VII. (ed. Peskett: Pitt Press); Horace Epistles, Book I. (ed. Shuckburgh: Pitt Press, or Wilkins Macmillans). The courses will be given in this order.

Hours of Lecture-Monday and Thursday, 6-7 p.m.

Composition. There will be two classes, Junior and Senior. The Junior Course will deal with the Syntax of the sentence, and will lead up to continuous prose through the rendering of English Idiom. It is intended for those who have not previously received a sufficient grounding in Syntax and Idiom. In the Senior Course, continuous prose will be so treated as to illustrate the several Latin styles, and the standard of difficulty will be that of the B.A. pass examination, but the lectures of the first term will be of a less advanced kind.

Hours of Lectures-Junior Course, Monday, 7-8 p.m.; Senior, Thursday, 7-8 p.m.

Latin Grammar (Historical).—The course on Latin Grammar, historically treated, will be continued and finished during the current session. Lectures will be given fortnightly, alternating with lectures on sight translation.

Hour of Lecture-Friday, 7-8 p.m.

Philology. The course on Philology will henceforth form part of the Honours course, but is open to all students who may wish to attend.

Hour of Lecture-Saturday, 10-11.

Honours" Lectures in Latin are subject to special arrangement. For the present, the hours of lecture are-Tuesday, 5-6 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. (tutorial).

SYLLABUS OF LECTURES.

GREEK (PROFESSOR H. ARNOLD TALBOT-TUBBS).

The following courses will be delivered :

Translation.-Lectures on the prescribed books: Thucydides, Book VII., Aristophanes Knights (ed. Merry Clarendon Press).

Hours of Lecture-Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.—12 noon.

Composition.-Lectures will be of a tutorial character. Sidgwick's "Greek Prose Composition" will be used as a Textbook.

Hour of Lecture-Tuesday, 10-11 a.m.

"Honours" Lectures in Greek are subject to special arrangement. For the present, the hours of lecture are— -Saturday, 11-12 and 12-1.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE.

ENGLISH LITERATURE.

The following courses of lectures will be delivered in the Session of 1900:

I. The History of English Literature from 1800 to 1850. The subject will be treated in the following order:

(a) General Introduction to the Period.

(b) English Poetry, 1800-1850. Chief Authors to be treated: -Later works of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, Crabbe, Landor, Scott, Moore, Campbell, Byron, Keats. Early works of Tennyson and Browning.

(c) Prose Fiction, 1800-1850. Chief Authors to be treated:-Scott, Miss Edgeworth, Miss Austen, Thackeray, Dickens. Early works of Kingsley and Charlotte Brontë.

(d) Miscellaneous Prose Writers: Critics, Reviewers, Essayists, etc. Chief writers to be treated: Lamb, Coleridge, Southey, Landor, De Quincey, Macaulay.
