TORONTO PREFACE THIS Primary arithmetic presents the subject in a way that is attractive to a pupil. Various numerical plays, games, and drill devices are introduced to encourage the pupil's self-activity. This is accomplished without sacrifice of serious intent. Frequent reviews aid the pupil in retaining the facts and processes he has discovered. The technique of arithmetic is simplified in several cases, with the view of securing greater economy of effort. For instance, the quotient which in other works is written below the dividend in short division, and above the dividend in long division, is here always written above. The practice in this book is arranged so as to establish the pupil in habits of accuracy and to develop reasonable speed in the correct performance of the operations. The exercises and problems are progressive tests. Special tests for the measuring of the arithmetical abilities of the children are given at the close of the book.
