MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS

1. How much is ++? How much, then, is 3 × ? 2. How much is 2 × ? 4 × 3?

[blocks in formation]

To multiply a fraction by a whole number, multiply the numerator by the whole number, and under the product write the denominator.

It will shorten the work to cancel any common factor in the whole number and denominator before multiplying. This is the same as reducing the fraction to its lowest terms after multiplying.

Thus, 4 and 6 contain the factor 2; then divide 4 and 6 by 2, cancel them, and write

the quotients 2 and 3 in their places.

Always use cancellation when possible.
