Note to Teachers. In all the preceding lessons in addition, the learners have been enabled to obtain their answers by counting the pictures of the objects embraced in the questions; and if they have obtained any conception of the addition of abstract numbers, the acquirement has been incidental. The subsequent exercises, however, will render this acquirement more certain. In the following lessons, the numbers embraced in the questions are represented by unit marks; and the teacher must direct the learners to count these marks, as they have heretofore counted the pictures.
