The following table of the multiples of 96 may be 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 96 192 288 384 480 576 | 672 | 768 | 864 | 960 EXAMPLES. What is the value of 96 yards at 93d. ? Here 9 d. 39 farthings; and, by doubling the right hand figure for shillings, we have £3 18s. answer. What is the value of 288 yards of cloth at 5s. 24d. per yard? Here 5s. 2 d. x3=15s. 74d.; the pence being half in number of the shillings, we know at once that it is 750 farthings, and consequently, the answer must be £75. Is 1 perch of mortar wall cost 3s. 1d., what will 576 perches cost? Answer, £90. If 1 gallon of brandy cost 7s. 34d., what will 672 gallons cost? Answer, £245. A GENERAL RULE FOR DIVISIONAL PROCESSES. Rule. First, Place either the number of shillings, pence, or farthings, in a £. sterling (as may seem most convenient) for a numerator; and make the divisor in the question a denominator. Secondly. Reduce this fraction to its lowest terms; and multiply the dividend by it. Thirdly. If the number of shillings in a pound be put as a numerator, the number of pounds sterling in the product, considered as shillings, will be the answer. If pence as a numerator, the number of pounds sterling in the product considered as pence will also be the answer. And so on, in like manner, if farthings be put for a numerator. EXAMPLES. If 320 yards cost £17 13s. 4d., what is the cost per yard? Here, by putting 20 as the numerator, we have the And £17 13s. 4d.÷16 £1 2s. 1d., or £15. SECONDLY By putting 240 as a numerator, we have 38. And £17 13s. 4d. X-£134; consider this as pence, because the pence in a pound was put as a numerator, and we have the same answer as above. THIRDLY. The following may be the most convenient method; by putting 960 as a numerator, we then have $8, or 3. And £17 13s. 4d. X 3= £53. Consequently, 53 farthings, or 134d., is the answer. If 192 yards cost £76 7s. 6d., what did it cost per yard? Answer, 7s. 114d. 7. Bought 640 lb. for £93 7s. 6d., what did it cost per lb. ? Answer, 2s. 11d.. INDEX. Reduction of Fractions ..
