Total 355 Of these 97 passed for their second language in Sanskrit, 44 in Latin, 5 in Portuguese, 79 in Marathi, 109 in Gujerathi, 16 in Canarese, 2 in Hindustani, 8 in Persian, and 4 in Sindhi; 243 Candidates were Hindus, 74 Parsis, 17 Europeans and IndoEuropeans, 13 Portuguese, 7 Sindhis, and 1 a Muhammadan. First Examination in Arts.-At this examination, which was held in April last, there were 146 Candidates, of whom 48 passed the examination. Of these 23 were from Elphinstone College, 19 from Deccan College, 2 from Free General Assembly's Institution, Bombay, and 4 from St. Xavier's College. 35 were Hindus, 10 Parsis, 2 Europeans, and 1 a Portuguese. Of the 48 Candidates 27 selected Sanskrit as their second language, 11 Latin, and 10 Persian. In the selected subjects of the Examination 35 were examined in Butler's Sermons, 7 in Analytical Geometry, and 6 in Chemical Physics. Examination for the Degree of B.A.-At this examination 55 Candidates were examined, of whom 23 passed; 2 were placed in the First Class, and the remaining 21 in the Second Class; 19 being Hindus and 4 Parsis. Of the 23 Candidates 14 were from Elphinstone College, 8 from Deccan College, and 1 from St. Xavier's College; 15 selected Sanskrit as their second language, and 8 Latin. Of selected subjects 8 passed in History, 8 in Logic and Moral Philosophy, 20 in Political Economy, 7 in Dynamics and Hydrostatics, 1 in Optics and Astronomy, 14 in Analytical Geometry, 9 in Differential and Integral Calculus, and 2 in Chemical Physics. Examination for the Degree of M.A. in Languages.-There were 5 Candidates, of whom 3 passed the examination in the Second Class; 2 were Hindus, and 1 a European; 2 were from Deccan College, and 1 from St. Xavier's College; 2 selected Sanskrit as their second language, and 1 Latin. Examination for the Degree of M.A. in History and Philosophy.-There was only 1 Candidate for this examination, who failed to pass the examination. Examination for the Degree of M.A. in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy.-There were 2 Candidates, who failed to pass the examination. Examination for the Degree of LL.B.-There were 7 Candidates, from the Government Law School, of whom 3 passed the examination in the Second Division; 2 were Hindus, and 1 a Parsi. First Examination for L.M.-There were 26 Candidates from Grant Medical College, of whom 13 passed the examination; 1 was a Hindu, 6 were Parsis, and 6 Portuguese. One was placed in the First Division, and the rest in the Second Division, Examination for the Degree of L.M.-There were 8 Candidates from Grant Medical College; they all passed the Examination, 2 in the First Class, and 6 in the Second Class; 4 were Hindus, 3 Portuguese, and 1 a Parsi. Examination for the Degree of M.D.-There was only 1 Candidate, and he failed to pass the examination. First Examination in Civil Engineering.—There were 23 Candiates from Puna Civil Engineering College, of whom 15 passed the Examination; 11 were Hindus, 3 Europeans, and 1 a Portuguese; 6 were placed in the First Division, and 9 in the Second Division. Examination for the Degree of L.C.E.-There were 11 Candidates from Puna Civil Engineering College, of whom 8 passed the Examination, 1 in the First Class, and 7 in the Second Class; 4 were Hindus, and 4 Parsis. UNIVERSITY PRIZES. The Jam Shri Vibhaji Scholarship was awarded to Motichand Udhavji Sett, of Kathiawar High School, Rajkote. The Hebbert and La Touche Scholarship was awarded to Devshankar Ravishankar Achárya, of Kathiawar High School, Rajkote. The Jugonnath Sunkersett Sanskrit Scholarships-The two Scholarships, one of Rs. 25 a month and one of Rs. 20 a month, and tenable for three years, were respectively awarded to Váman Shivram Apte, of Rajaram High School, Kolhapur, and Krishnáji Vishnu Gokhale, of Ratnagiri High School. The Cawasji Jehanghier Latin Scholarship, of the value of Rs. 200 a year, was awarded to Conrad Pereira, of St. Mary's Institution, Bombay. The Ellis Prize, consisting of Books of the value of Rs. 60, which was assigned by the Syndicate this year to the Persian Language, was awarded to Behrámshah Rastamji Contractor, of Puna High School. The Bai Maneckbai Byramjee Jejeebhoy Prize, consisting of Books of the value of Rs. 80, was awarded to Conrad Pereira, of St. Mary's Institution, Bombay, for proficiency in General Knowledge. The Rao Sir Pragmalji Scholarships for 1872.-One Scholarship of Rs. 20 per month tenable for three years was awarded during the last year to a Kutchi Candidate, Fazal Manji Khimjiani, of Elphinstone High School; and there being no other Kutchi candidate entitled to receive the second Scholarship of Rs. 15 a month and tenable for three years, it was awarded to Mulla Faizallabhái Lukmánji, of Surat High School, for his having got the highest number of marks among the Native Candidates (a condition specially attached to the endowment) at the Matriculation Examination of 1872. The Rao Sir Pragmalji Scholarships for 1873.-The first Scholarship of Rs. 20 a month was awarded to Karmáli Rahim Nánjiíni, and the second Scholarship of R. 15 a month to Visanji Hansraj Gorátelá, both of Elphinston Cone High School; they were both Kutchis. The Ellis Scholarship, of the value of Rs. 25 per mensem and tenable for one year, was awarded to Dinsháh Pestanji Kángá, of Elphinstone College, for having passed the best examination in English at the B.A. Examination. The Bhugwandás Purshotamdás Sanskrit Scholarship.-There were four Candidates for this Scholarship, but the Scholarship has remained unawarded. The Arnould Scholarship, of the value of Rs. 22 per mensem, was awarded to Rámchandra Gopál Deshmukh, B.A, of Government Law School. The James Berkley Gold Medal, of the value of Rs. 250, with a prize of Books on Civil and Mechanical Engineering of the value of Rs. 150, has been awarded to Bamanji Sorábji, of Puna Civil Engineering College, he having obtained the highest number of marks in the Examination for the Degree of L.C.E., and having been also specially recommended by the Examiners in Engineering and Engineering Drawing, The Munguldass Nathoobhoy Travelling Fellowship.-This Fellowship has remained vacant since the resignation of the last incumbent. The vacancy was announced for competition in January 1873, but no candidate has yet come forward. The Manockjee Limjee Gold Medal.—The subject announced for the essay for this Medal last year was The Demonology of Western India." Two essays were sent in, but, neither of them having been found worthy of the Medal, it was not awarded. The Homejee Cursetjee Prize.-Six competitive poems on the subject of "Akbar" were sent in, but, none of them having been found worthy of the Prize, it was not awarded. REGULATIONS. During the year under review very few alterations were made in the Bye-Laws and Regulations. DEGREE CONFERRED. Since the last Convocation for Conferring Degrees the Senate at their Meeting held on the 11th November last conferred. as a special case, the Degree of B.A., in accordance with Section XI. of the Act of Incorporation, on Mr. Shivrám Purshurám Bhide, of Deccan College-who had passed the B.A. Examination in December 1872, but was unable to appear at the last Convocation to get his Degree, in consequence of severe indisposition,-in order to enable him to appear at the last M.A. Examination. ENDOWMENTS. The Sir Jasvantsingji Scholarships.-His Highness Sir Jasvantsingji, K.C.S.I., the late Thakur of Bhawnagar, having set apart a sum of money to commemorate the visit of His Roval Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to Bombay in 1870, a sum of Rs. 25,000 was invested in Government 4 per cent. paper, which the present Joint Administrators of the Bhawnagar State offered to the University in July last to found six Scholarships, to be called the Sir Jasvantsingji Scholarships," two to be awarded every year to the Candidates who passed the Matriculation Examination after having studied for two years continuously before Matriculation in the Bhawnagar Alfred High School. At a Meeting of the Senate, held on the 11th November 1873, this offer was accepted by the Senate with their best thanks. The Karsandas Mulji Prize.-Mr. Sorábji Shápurji Bengali, Honorary Secretary to the Karsandás Mulji Memorial Fund, in a letter dated the 11th November 1873, to the address of the Registrar, offered to the University the sum of Rs. 3,000 in Government 4 per cent. paper, for the purpose of founding an annual prize to be called the "Karsandas Mulji Prize," of Rs. 100, to be awarded to the best essay in English on any moral or social subject selected by the Syndicate, by any Graduate or Under-graduate of the University. At a Meeting of the Senate held on the 20th December last, this Endowment was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate. THE UNIVERSITY HALL.
