In this Rule we must observe six things, viz. The Gross weight, the Tare, the Tret, the Suttle, the Cloff, and the Neat* weight. EXPLANATION. 1. The Gross weight is the whole weight of the goods with the hogshead, the barrel, the box, the chest, &c. or whatever contains the merchandise, all being weighed together. 2. Tare is an allowance made to the purchaser for the weight of the hogshead, barrel, box, &c. 3. Tret is an abatement of 4lb. on 104, being the 26th part, allowed for dust, waste, &c. 4. Suttle is the name of the weight after part of the allowances are deducted from the gross. 5. Cloff is an allowance to the purchaser, of 2lb on every 3 cwt. 6. Neat weight is what remains after all allowances are deducted from the Gross. * Net or Nett, has been obsolete more than forty years. CASE 1. RULE. Subtract the tare from the gross the remainder is neat. LESSON 1. What is the neat weight of 16 hogsheads of tobacco each weighing 5cwt. Iqr. 19lb. gross; tare in the whole, 1600lb. Answer, 72cwt. Iqr. 20lb, DIRECTIONS. Multiply 5cwt. Iqr. 19lb. by 16, or by 4 and by 4; the product will be the whole gross. Reduce 1600lb, tare into hundreds, quarters and pounds. subtract this from the gross, the remainder will be neat, cwt. qr. lb. Multiply the Tare of one barrel by the namber of barrels, &c., subtract the product from the gross, the remainder will be neat. LESSON 2. In 14 hogsheads of sugar, weighing in the whole 89 cwt. 3 qrs. 17 lbs. gross; tare 100 lbs. on each hogshead, how much neat weight; Ans. 77 cwt. I qr. 17 lbs. CASE 3. RULE. Divide the gross by the aliquot parts of a hundred weight, subtract the quotient from the gross, and the remainder will be neat; but, if the tare be not an aliquot part, then say: As 112 lbs. gross, are to the tare per cent.; LESSON 3.
