Ans.

Compound proportion teaches from five given numbers to find a sixth, or from seven to find an eighth, &c.

To find the sixth term, &c.

RULE.-Make that number which is of the same kind as the number sought, the third term; then take any two given numbers, both of a kind, and state them as in simple proportion, next take other two numbers, both of a kind, and state them as before; if any more numbers remain, proceed in the same manner.-Multiply the product of the second terms by the third term, and divide the number thus produced by the product of the first terms, the quotient is the sixth term in the same name as the third.

NOTE. Each pair of similar terms must be reduced to the same name. If any of the first terms, and either the third or any of the second terms, are divisible by the same number, the work may be abridged by dividing them both by it.
