NOTE. If the price be any even number of shillings, multiply the quantity by half the number, doubling the first figure of the product for shillings; the rest are

IV. When the quantity is compound. RULE.-Multiply the price by the number of integers (if any), find also the value of the inferior names by taking aliquot parts; this value added to the price of the integers will be the amount of the whole.

V. When the quantity is a mixed number. RULE.-Find the value of the integral part, by the former rules; find also the value of the fraction by multiplying the price by the numerator, and dividing the product by the denominator; the sum of these values will be the answer.

COMMERCIAL ALLOWANCES. Commercial allowances are certain deductions made from the gross weight of goods.

The gross weight of any commodity, is its own weight, together with that of its package.

Draft is an allowance per bag, cask, &c., on some goods, that the weight may hold out, when they are sold by retail.

Tare is an allowance made for the weight of the package, and is deducted after the draft. Net weight is that which remains after all deductions have been made.

To find the net weight.

RULE. From the gross weight subtract the draft, and from the remainder deduct the tare; what remains is the net weight.

NOTE. If the tare be at so much per cent., the tare for the whole is found by proportion or practice, and is calculated to the nearest half-pound.

EXERCISES.

1. Required the net weight of 3 bags of cottonwool, each weighing 2 cwt. 3 qr. 11 lb. gross, draft 1 lb. per bag, and tare 3 lb. per cwt. Ans. 8 cwt. 1 qr. 4 lb.

2. Required the net weight of 16 bales of cotton, each weighing 1 cwt. 2 qr. 3 lb. gross, draft 1 lb. per bale, and tare 5 lb. per cwt. 22 lb.

Ans. 23 cwt.

3. Find the net weight of 7 chests congou, each weighing 1 cwt. 1 qr. 5 lb. gross, draft 1 lb. per chest, and tare 19 lb. per cwt. Ans. 7 cwt. 1 qr. 25 lb.

4. Find the net weight of 43 bags of pimento, each weighing 3 qr. 16 lb. gross, draft 1 lb. per bag, and tare 6 lb. per cwt. Ans. 35 cwt. 3 qr.

25 lb.

5. Find the net weight of 9 chests of bark, each weighing 2 cwt. 1 qr. 21 lb. gross, draft 1 lb. per chest, and tare 25 lb. per cwt. Ans. 16 cwt. 3 qr. 25 lb.

6. Find the net weight of 4 chests souchong, each weighing 3 qr. 26 lb. gross, draft 1 lb. per chest, and tare 24 lb. per cwt. Ans. 3 cwt. 6 lb.

7. Find the net weight of 24 barrels of rice, each weighing 2 cwt. 1 qr. 18 lb. gross, tare 22 lb. per cwt. Ans. 46 cwt. 1 qr. 27 lb.

8. Find the net weight of 100 hhds. of sugar, each weighing 7 cwt. 1 qr. 17 lb. gross, tare 17 lb. ..per cwt. Ans. 627 cwt. 2 qr. 9 lb.
