I.

1. Ezra vii.-X. B.C. 458. What contemporary document throws a light on the position of the Jews towards the close of the captivity? With whom may we probably identify Artaxerxes of chap. vii.? Give the principal events of his reign. Describe the starting of the second caravan, and account for its small numbers. Why was Ezra so urgent for the removal of the foreign wives and children? Shew that this severe measure was both needful and successful.

2. Comment on Ezra's office as scribe, and on its later development. What later particulars of him are supplied? What other writings, additions, and compilations have been correctly or incorrectly ascribed to him? How are you disposed to regard 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras? Give context (i) "But the eye of their God was upon the elders.” (ii) " Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee.'

3. Psalms xcvii.-ci. Shew that Psalms xciii.-xcix. all prophesy a divine kingdom on earth. When was Psalm xcviii. inserted in Evensong? Comment on the use of the trumpet in Jewish worship. On what occasions did Moses and Samuel exercise priestly functions? How may Psalm c. be regarded? To what authors have Psalms ci. and ciii. been ascribed? Give your reasons for a preference for either. Explain Psalms xcvii. v. 8, xcix. v. 1, ci. vv. 2, 3, 8.

4. St. John x-xvii. Where is the anointing, referred to chap. xi. v. 2, more fully recounted? When did it probably take place, and by which of the Evangelists is it narrated? Why was the raising of Lazarus so alarming to the Sanhedrim, and what heightened their fears, so that they determined to destroy Christ at all risks? Comment on the office of Annas and Caiaphas (see Luke iii. v. 2). How does St. John end his account of Christ's public ministry? Give a tabular account of the events of Holy Week which he records.

5. Give a short account of the usual Paschal supper, and shew what digressions were then made. What was the purport of Christ's last discourse with His faithful followers? What promise was reiterated, and what prophecies uttered? How may chap. xvii. be regarded? Shew the appropriateness of the last parable, comparing Psalm lxxx., Isai. v., Jer. ii. Compare chap. xiv. with the opening of the Gospel.

6. St. James. Whom do you regard as the author of this epistle, and what do you know of him? To whom was it addressed? When and where was it probably written? With what other epistle does it seem to bear connexion? Cite some instances. What is its tenor? What vices are denounced, and what virtue specially commended? What is the teaching regarding faith and works, as exemplified by Abraham? Who are the types of a dead faith?

7. Why has the genuineness of this epistle at times been called in question, and by what authorities? What is the character and fruit of heavenly wisdom? Compare chap. iii. vv. 2-13 with Matth. v. v. 22, xii. v. 37, xv. v. 11, Prov. xii. v. 18, Psalm lxxiii. vv. 8, 9.

III. (a)

8. What does Butler say concerning the proof of natural religion and Christianity which is offered to ordinary men, concerning the objections which will present themselves, and what is necessary for their refutation, which cannot ordinarily be given? Why can there be no parallel between the commands of God to us, and those of a prince to his servants?

9. What does Hooker lay down as the broad law of human nature? What are the two degrees of goodness which we involuntarily seek, and what the perfections which we consciously desire? Contrast our desire of knowledge with that of the Angels. How do beasts, stones, and plants exceed man, and in what does his excellence consist? What would be the effect of a perfect education?

10. Enumerate the allusions to 1 Cor. which Paley selects from 2 Cor., and which he describes as arising spontaneously from the subject and the situation of those concerned. What does he remark of Titus? How does this epistle detail the account of the uproar at Ephesus? Comment on St. Paul's change of route, the reason and time of change, and why he had not explained himself in 1 Cor. What chapter of Acts probably synchronizes with this epistle? How many beatings and stonings of Paul had been already recorded? What does Paley conclude to have been the limit of Paul's missionary labours at that date, and to what period does he refer, "Thrice I suffered shipwreck"?

5. Give the particulars and date of the Treaty of Berwick, the Great Council, the Treaty of Ripon, the Root and Branch Bill, the Triennial Bill.

6. What circumstances brought about the signing of the Magna Charta? Narrate its chief conditions, and indicate the action of John after having signed it.

7. Sketch, as fully as possible, the course of the constitutional struggles of Henry III.'s reign, and describe the peculiarities of the Parliaments of 1253, 1264, and 1265.

8. Give a short account of Edward I. during the life-time of his father.

5. Write a short essay on the causes of the English Reformation, with a sketch of the actual events of that Reformation.
