man. Whilst Shakespeare and Goethe were able to get out of themselves and to rej resent characters unlike their own with a verisimilitude which resembles self-portraiture, Dante was confined by his own personality, He invariably produced himself in his work. Narrow-minded, scornful, disdainful, and sarcastic (yet with depths of pity such as amiable souls never feel) he appears in the Commedia what he appeared in life. His horizon was bounded; but all that came within that horizon he saw with unprecedented clearness of vision, and represented with unprecedented vigour and distinctness. Truly might the people of Verona point him out in their streets as the man who had seen Hell; all he described seemed then, as it seems now, to be a narrative of personal adventure. Mr. Long

fellow has fortunately been able to preserve these distinctive features of the original. Nor has he been less successful in his rendering of the purely poetical passages of the work-those passages in which the greatness of the poet are most eminently displayed. Coleridge, according to Mr. Carlyle, must be credited with the acute remark that Dante, unlike most poets, subordinated the form to the thought, so that wherever you find a sentence musically worded, true in rythm and rich in melody, there also you will find depth and goodness in the meaning. Body and soul, word and idea, go together. Professor Longfellow has shown an appreciation of this fact; and, in his rendering of certain well-known and oft-quoted passages, he has been extremely successful. Indeed, to all those who are unable to read the Commedia in the original, his work may be honestly recommended as the most trustworthy we possess.

Each of the three volumes contains complete and interesting "Notes" and "Illustrations" to the several poems. Nothing of importance that has been written on the subject of Dante and his sublime works seems to have been omitted. In addition to the notes which serve and illustrate an obscure allusion or clear up a disputed passage, we have a series of extracts from the works of such men as Voltaire, Mazzini, Carlyle, and Macaulay, so that, in the space of three volumes, the English reader will possess not only "the soul of the middle ages rendered rhythmically," but the various and multiform opinions that have been expressed concerning him by the most eminent writers of all countries. The third volume contains a complete Index.

CORRESPONDENCE. "RATTENING."

To the Editor of the BOOKSELLER. DEAR SIR,-In your number for August, 1865, you kindly inserted a letter from me containing the following

"Whenever the retail booksellers are disposed to agree to rules for the government of our trade, I shall be ready, as I have always been, to conform to their regulations; but while it is their pleasure that the trade should be carried on as it is at present, without any restrictions whatever, it seems in the highest degree unreasonable that any one should find fault with me for taking such measures as may appear necessary for my own protection or advantage."

I then thought, and still think, this offer fair, and the position it assumes unassailable. Others, however, do not think so, as appears from the following extract from a letter from Messrs. Hamilton, Adams, & Co., wholesale booksellers, Paternoster Row, dated July 2nd, 1867 :

"We regret to inform you that we feel it duty to close your account. We take this step solely because of your continuing to sell to the public at trade price, and sometimes less than that; but we may add, that we do not do s through any hesitation about TRUSTING you."

I desire, therefore, to withdraw the offer quoted above. After being "rattened" one day, Í should not like to be called upon to co-operate in the next. This action of Messrs. Hamilton, adopted, of course, in the interest of certain clients of theirs (unless, indeed, they are only m geniously touting for business at my expense), throws a new light on the bookselling question. The system which was inaugurated in 1852 seems in practice to amount to this, that those who made their business by underselling others when competition was forbidden, shall be protected from being themselves undersold now that the principle of competition is accepted. In short, it is a deliberate attempt to obtain a protective monopoly for those who destroyed the old system of protection. I can understand what a systema of protection means, and have no objection to be protected; and I can understand what freedom of action is, and have no objection to be left to take care of myself; but that others should be set free to undersell me, and that then some gentlemen-be they wholesale booksellers or publishers-should interfere to prevent me from protecting myself, while they refuse to pro tect me, is what I cannot understand, and what I shall not submit to without a struggle.

The reformers of the book trade seem just now to be pretty much in the same position as certain other insincere reformers of greater matters. They had thought only of the advantages to be derived to themselves from the monopoly of their 'twopenny offer," and they had not calculated on being outbidden by the Conservative "threepence.' Yours, &c.,

BOOKS WANTED.

To the Editor of the BOOKSELLER. SIR, -About June, 1866, I advertised in the BOOKSELLER for a certain work, and received in due course a report from a bookseller in Worcester, saying he could forward it on receipt of 58. 4d. in postage-stamps, which I sent him immediately; but received no answer for about a week, when I wrote again, asking about the delay. He answered by saying I was to send him six more stamps, on receipt of which he would send it post free. Up to this time I have received nothing, although I have written repeatedly and threatened to expose him. Could you or any of your numerous readers advise me what to do under the circumstances? I am yours very respectfully, JOHN HORROCKS.

Church, near Acrington,
July 22, 1867.

A CAUTION.-A subscriber writes to say that in reply to his advertisement of a book wanted, he received one dated from 79, Sloane Street, London, offering to supply the book for a certain number of stamps, which he sent, but hearing no more from the person who made the offer, he sent the letters up to London, and it was then found that the address given was a post-office, where the party in question was unknown.
