TABLE OF STERLING MONEY.

A farthing is usually written d.; more rarely 1 q. 2 Farthings make 1 halfpenny.

The copper, or rather bronze coins in use are the penny (1d.), the halfpenny (d.), and the farthing (d.).

The silver coins in use are the crown (5s.), the halfcrown (2s. 6d.), the florin (2s.), the shilling (ls.), the sixpence (6d.), the fourpenny-piece or groat (4d.), and the threepenny-piece (3d.).

The gold coins in use are the sovereign or pound (£1), and the half-sovereign (10s.).

The guinea (21s.) and half-guinea (10s. 6d.) were gold coins, but are now out of use. We still, however, speak frequently of guineas and half-guineas.

The following table also should be committed to memory:

4 Threepenny-pieces make 1 shilling.
3 Fourpenny-pieces... " 1 shilling.
