VII. Given a certain sum per day, to find how much it will amount to in a year.

RULE.-Consider the pence as pounds, and every farthing as five shillings; add to this sum its half and five times the daily sum.

Thus, 4s. 2 d. a day will in a year amount to

£50, 10s. + £25, 5s. + £1, ls. 04d. or £76, 16s. 01d.

VIII. Given a certain sum per working day, to find how much it will amount to in a year.

RULE. Add together as many pounds, crowns, shillings, and pence as there are pence in the daily sum. Thus, 3s. 5d. per working day will in a year amount to £4141 crowns + 41s. + 41d. or £53, 9s. 5d. Find what the following rates per working day will amount to in a year, or 313 days:

CHAMBERS'S

ARITHMETICAL EXERCISES.

PART III.

TABLES OF. WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.

AVOIRDUPOIS WEIGHT.

Used for weighing all articles except gold, silver, &c.

16 Drams (dr.)..........make 1 ounce (oz.)

16 Ounces.....

28 Pounds...

4 Quarters..

20 Hundredweights.....

[ocr errors]

1 pound (lb.).

[ocr errors][ocr errors][ocr errors][merged small]

It is useful to remember that

1 quarter (qr.). 1hundredweight (cwt.).

14 Pounds...................................make 1 stone.

8 Stones...

1 hundredweight. 112 Pounds........................................ 1 hundredweight.

[ocr errors]

1 Pound avoirdupois contains 7000 grains.

TROY WEIGHT.

Used for weighing gold, silver, jewels, and certain liquids.

24 Grains (gr.)............make 1 pennyweight (dwt.). 20 Pennyweights........ 1 ounce (oz.).

12 Ounces...

"1 1 pound (lb.).

1 Pound troy contains 5760 grains.

APOTHECARIES' WEIGHT,

As generally found in Arithmetical Tables, is now superseded. The British Pharmacopoeia gives the following table:

APOTHECARIES' FLUID MEASURE.

60 Minims (m)................................make 1 fluid drachm_(fil.3).

8 Fluid drachms......

1 fluid ounce (fl.3).

[merged small][ocr errors]

1 pint (0).

[ocr errors]

1 gallon (C).

LINEAL MEASURE.

Used for measuring lengths or distances without

regard to breadth.

12 Inches (in.)...........make 1 foot (ft.).

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small]

4 Inches make 1 hand (used in measuring horses).

6 Feet.... п

1 fathom { (used in sounding the

ocean or mines). Mechanics have the inch divided into halves, quarters, and eighths; scientific men divide it into tenths, hundredths, &c.

Land-surveyors, in measuring distances, use a chain which is 22 yards or 4 poles long, and is divided into

100 links.

CLOTH MEASURE.

2 Inches (in.)..............................make 1 nail (nl.).

[merged small][ocr errors]

1 quarter (qr.). "1 1 yard (yd.).

The English ell, which is seldom used, contains 5 quarters.
