INVOLUTION.

INVOLUTION is the method of raising powers from a given number, called the root.

A power is the product arising from multiplying a number by itself, and the product thence arising by the root, as often as is required. Thus, 8 is the third power of 2, because 2×2×2=8; and 81 is the fourth power of 3, because 3×3×3×3=81. The number denoting the power is called the index, and is sometimes written thus, 4, the second power of 4; 6, the third power of 6.

The product of two powers will always equal the power denoted by the sum of their indices; as 53 = 3125; so 5a×53 = 3125.

What is Involution? What is a power? What is the number denoting the power called? What will the product of two powers always equal? What is the rule for involving the root to the required power 2
