CURRENCIES OF THE UNITED STATES.

IN Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, the dollar is reckoned at 6 shillings; consequently, the value of the shilling is 163 cents.

In New York and North Carolina the dollar is reckoned at 8 shillings, and the shilling is 12 cents.

In New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, the dollar is reckoned at 7 shillings and 6 pence. The shilling is 13 cents.

In South Carolina and Georgia the dollar is reckoned at 4 shillings and 8 pence, and the shilling is 213 cents.

When there are 6 shillings to the dollar, divide 100 cents by 6, and you will have the value of the shilling in Federal Money.

When there are 8 shillings to the dollar, divide by 8.

When there are 7 shillings and 6 pence to the dollar, multiply 100 cents by 2, and divide by 15.

When there are 4 shillings and 8 pence to the dollar, multiply 100 cents by 3, and divide by 14.

In Canada and Nova Scotia the dollar is reckoned at 5 shillings-the shilling at 20 cents.

In English or sterling money the dollar is reckoned at 4 shillings and 6 pence-the shilling at 22 cents.

In Irish money the dollar is 4 shillings and 101 pence-the shilling 2030 cents.

A pound sterling is equal to 4.444 dollars, United States

money.

An English guinea is equal to 4.663 dollars; but in business transactions they pass for 5 dollars at present, (Jan. 1849.) They however vary in value from time to time.

REDUCTION is the method of changing quantities from one denomination into another.

There are two kinds of Reduction, viz.: Reduction Descending and Reduction Ascending.
