PERCENTAGE

Fractions having 100 for denominator are used so extensively that they receive special attention and give us some new expressions.

Thus is read six hundredths; but may also be read as six per cent, and it may be written as .06 or 6 %. Per cent means one in each hundred, or by the hundred. The symbol, %, means per cent, and is placed directly after the number with which it is used. It signifies that the number is the numerator of a fraction whose denominator is 100.

Any per cent is readily written as a decimal by pointing off two places. Thus: 7% = .07, 25% .25, 115%=1.15. 7% means 7 for each 100; 1; or .07.

25% means 25 for each 100 25
; 100 or .25.

115% means 115 for each 100; 11; or 1.15.

By writing the denominator and then reducing the fraction it is easy for us to see that:

In solving problems we usually write the per cent as a decimal and use it according to the methods that we have learned for decimals.

Example 1. In a city school system there are 5250 children in attendance. If 84% are promoted, how many are promoted?

84% of 5250 is the same as .84 × 5250 = 4410.

Example 2. Find 58% of 3880.

Find:

58% of 3880 means .58 × 3880 = 2263}.

32. A lawyer charged 6% for collecting a debt of $3720. Find his fee. How much did he remit to his client?

24. Piles used in the construction of a railroad bridge are 42 ft. long, and 83% of their length is beneath the water. Find the length in the water.
