BUYING AT THE GROCERY

In the grocery many things are sold by the dozen. There are twelve things in a dozen.

Many other things are sold by the pound. There are sixteen ounces in one pound.

Some things are sold by the peck or by the bushel. There are four pecks in one bushel.

doz. means dozen or dozens.

lb. means pound or pounds. pk. means peck or pecks. bu. means bushel or bushels.

oz. means ounce or ounces.

8. A family that uses care saves an average of 3,000 feet of gas each month. If gas costs $.55 a thousand feet, how much does the family save in one year?

9. If a family saves an average of 8 pounds of sugar a month, and sugar is worth 9 cents a pound, how much does the family save in one year?

10. Certain kinds of canned fruit that cost 35 cents a can can be bought by the dozen cans at $3.25. If a family uses 8 dozen cans each year, how much can be saved by buying by the dozen?
