V. BRING DOWN: Bring down the 6 of the dividend and write it at the right of 12. The new partial dividend is 126. I. DIVIDE: 126 contains 49 two times. Write 2 in the quotient above the 6 of the dividend.

II. MULTIPLY: 2X49=98.

III. SUBTRACT: 126-98=28.

IV. COMPARE: 28 is less than 49.

There are no more figures in the dividend to bring down. Write the remainder at the right of 32, and over the divisor, 49. 1596÷49 32.

Work the following long division examples. Be sure to place the remainders correctly.

IV. COMPARE: 2 is less than 46. V. BRING DOWN: Place the 0 at the right of the 2. The new partial dividend is 20. Since 46 is not contained in 20 you must write a 0 to the right of the 2 in the quotient, then bring down the next figure of the dividend. This gives 207. I. DIVIDE: 207 contains 46 four times. Place the 4 over the 7. II. MULTIPLY: 4X46 184.

=

III. SUBTRACT: 207-184 = 23.

IV. COMPARE: 23 is less than 46.

There are no more figures to bring down. Write the remainder at the right of 204, and over the divisor, 46. 9407÷46=20423.

LONG DIVISION EXAMPLES

You will find that long division examples will cause you less trouble if you use care to make neat figures and to keep your lines and columns of figures straight.

Divide each of the numbers below by each of those given in section X, and check:

NOTE TO TEACHER: From the large number of examples on this page and the next you should select enough to give the pupils sufficient drill in long division.
