In stating measurements we usually say "9 feet by 27 feet" instead of "9 feet wide and 27 feet long." The sign X is often used for "by." Thus: 9 ft.X27 ft. Observe that in stating measurements, the width is given first.

2. A room is 12 ft. by 15 ft. How many sq. ft. does it contain? A carpet that covers the room costs $40. How much did each sq. yd. of carpet cost?

3. A schoolroom contains 644 sq. ft. The room is 24 ft. long. How wide is it?

4. A walk measures 6 ft. by 60 ft. Find the number of sq. ft. and sq. yd. in it. The walk cost $90. What was the cost by the sq. ft.?
