1. Find the cost of 3 pounds of bacon at 38 cents a pound. This may be considered as approximately 3 pounds at 40 cents a pound. Notice that one factor must be made slightly smaller as the other factor is made slightly larger to keep the result approximately the same. Compare this result with the exact cost.

2. Find the cost of 2 pounds cheese at $.43 a pound.
Approximate solution: 3 X $.40. Exact solution: 2 × $.43.

3. What will 5 yards of cloth cost at $.68 a yard?
4. Find the cost of 15 pounds of lard at $.32 per pound.
5. How much will 17 yards of oil cloth cost at $.65 per yard?
6. Find the cost of a 53-pound roast at $.28 a pound.
7. What is the cost of 15 yards of gingham at $.39 a yard?
8. How much will 12 tons of hay cost at $26 a ton?

9. A farmer sold a grocer a can of lard containing 41 pounds at $.29 a pound. How much did he receive for it?

10. A woman, living in the city, bought 21 dozen eggs of a poultry raiser to put away for her winter's use. How much did

they cost at 38 cents a dozen?

11. Donald sold a grocer 16 quarts of strawberries at 19 cents a quart. How could he figure the approximate amount mentally so that he could check the grocer's exact computation? 12. Roy sold a neighbor woman 22 pounds of beans at 9 cents a pound. He charged her $2.03 for them. How could she figure the approximate amount to check his charge?

13. Henry sold a grocer 43 pounds of country butter at 54 cents a pound. How much sugar could he get in exchange at 11 cents a pound?

2. How wide must a piece of goods be to be 24 inches wide when complete if we allow for 6 quarter-inch tucks and a 2inch hem?

3. Find the cost of the following serge dress: 4 yards of serge at $3.00 a yard; 11⁄2 yards of braid at 18 cents a yard; 1 yard of lining at 35 cents; 1 yard stiffening at 25 cents; thread 15 cents; 1 card of hooks and eyes 10 cents and 1 bolt bias binding 20 cents.

4. Find the cost of a school apron: 1 yards percale at 35 cents a yard; 1 bolt ric-rac braid at 20 cents; 2 buttons at 20 cents a dozen; spool of thread at 5 cents.

5. A girl in the sewing class made a serge dress. She bought 3 yards of 54-inch serge at $3.00 a yard; yard of lining at 35 cents a yard; 1 card of hooks and eyes 10 cents; 1 bolt of bias binding at 20 cents; 1 bolt of braid at 18 cents; 1 spool of silk thread at 10 cents; 1 spool cotton at 5 cents and 20 cents worth of belting. Find the cost of her dress.

6. Find the cost of the materials for a gingham school dress: 8 yards of gingham at 371⁄2 cents a yard; yard linen at 90 cents a yard; 1 bolt bias binding at 20 cents; 1 card of hooks and eyes at 5 cents; 1 spool of thread at 5 cents and 1 yard belting at 20 cents.

7. Find the width of a piece of goods if it is to be 20 inches wide when finished if we are to allow for four-inch tucks, six-inch tucks, two-inch tucks and a 1-inch hem.
