PREFACE.

The rapid sale of a large Edition of a more advanced work on Arithmetic in Theory and Practice for Higher Class Schools has induced the Author to publish an abridgment of that work revised so as to make it suitable for the more Elementary Classes in Public and National Schools, both at home and in our Colonies.

The Exercises under all the Rules have been carefully graduated, and a sufficient number introduced to afford both interest and variety to pupils in the elementary stage.

The questions for class work have been selected from a great variety of sources, and are such as occur in the daily business of trade and commerce.
