this case is a combined work of study and teaching. The subjects of this training bear every appearance of being studious, thoughtful persons; the recitations conducted by them and the lectures given, and which I had the pleasure of hearing, were such as to convince me that the course pursued must produce an excellent man. Altogether I cannot speak too highly of what I saw in connection with the pupil teachers. One may ask whether such men can be needed afloat? Under the present system of the English I should answer no. All their men go to sea with the basis of a sound education; there is no raw material to work upon, and the general supposition is that in a few years the naval schoolmaster will disappear from sea-going ships. The proper place of these men is on board the training ships, where a great number are employed, and their education at present is conducted chiefly with a view to their service in them. I give at the end of this paper a full set of the examination papers set at the end of the last Christmas term, as it is only through them that a proper idea of the work done can be gained. S.
