Gross weight is the whole weight of goods, together with the cask, box, bag, or any other thing, which contains such goods. Tare is an allowance made to the buyer for the weight of the cask, box, bag, &c. which contains the goods bought, and is either so much per cask, &c. or so much per hundred weight, or so much in the whole weight. Tret is an allowance of 4 pounds, on every 104 pounds, for dust, and for retailing in smalls. Cloff is an allowance of 2 lbs. upon every 3 cwt. Suttle is what remains after one or two allowances have been deducted. RULE. Add the gross weight into one sum, and the tare into another; then subtract the total tare from the whole or total gross, and the remainder will be the neat or suttle weight. EXAMPLES. 1. Bought six barrels of flour, each weighing 226 pounds gross, tare 14 lbs. per barrel. How much is the neat weight, and how much must I pay for the flour, at 4 dollars 64 cents per 100 pounds? BARTER Is the exchanging of one commodity for another, and directs merchants and others how to make an exchange, without loss to either party. • I did not work for the fraction. H RULE. Find the value of the commodity, whose quantity is given; then find what quantity of the other, at the proposed rate, can be bought for the same money, and that will be the answer. EXAMPLES. 1. What quantity of flax, at 63 cents a pound, must I give for 12 lbs. of coffee, at 25 cents a pound? Here you must find how much the coffee comes to, by saying, If 1 : 25 :: 12 : 3 dollars. Now, you have the amount of the coffee; then you must find how many pounds of flax, at 64 cents a pound, will come to 3, by saying, cts. lb. dolls. If 64: 1 :: 3 : 48 lbs. Ans. 2. How much wheat, at 1 dol. 25 cts. a bushel, may be given for 50 bushels of rye, at 70 cents per bushel? Ans. 28 bushels. 3. A and B barters: A has muslin that cost him 20 cts. yard, and he puts it at 25 cents; B has calico, which stands him 30 cents a yard. At what price must he put it, to gain 10 per cent. more than A? Ans. 414 cents. 12. C has 300 yards of Irish linen, which stands him a dollar per yard: this he barters with D, at 1 dollar 5 cents. a yard, for rum, which stands D 1 dollar 9 cents a gallon. How many gallons of rum is C to receive in barter, and at what price, that their gains may be equal? Ans. 262-94 gallons, at $1 14 cts. a gallon. PROFIT AND LOSS Is a Rule by which merchants and traders discover their profit or loss, in buying and selling goods. It also instructs them how to rise or fall in the price of their goods, so as to gain or lose so much per cent. &c. EXAMPLES. 1. Bought a barrel of whiskey, containing $2 gallons, for 8 dollars, and afterwards I retailed it out, at 37 cents per gallon. How much did I gain on the barrel ? 2. Bought 100 peaches, at 2 for a cent, and 100 apples, at 3 for a cent; and afterwards I sold them all, at 5 for 2 cents. Whether do I gain or lose by this trade? Ans. I lose 3 cents. 3. Bought 3 cwt. of iron for 15 dollars 68 cents, and retailed it out at 64 cents a pound. How much is my gain on the whole, and how much per pound? Ans. { Whole gain $8 82 cts. |
