THE following translation extends to the General Theory of Equations, and comprehends a little more than one half of the original work. In preparing it for the press considerable use has been made of a translation by Augustus De Morgan, Professor of Mathematics in the University of London, extending to about one' fourth of the original treatise. Questions, intended as an exercise for the learner, are occasionally introduced. They were selected from the celebrated collection of Meier Heirsch.

Cambridge, July, 1831.
