"Few living classical scholars have done so much, or nearly so much, as Mr. Fowle to smooth the way of the classical scholar by a series of elementary works which for accuracy in detail and perfection of method, as well as practical utility, are, as a whole, unsurpassed by any similar works in this country. Their tone is scholarly and

thorough, and no real difficulty . . . is shirked."-School Board Chronicle.

"It has seldom been our fortune to light upon a Greek grammar in which economy and retrenchment of space went so thoroughly along with lucidity and solidity of information. . . . A vast amount of thought and pains has been bestowed upon such arrangements of declensions, divisions of a declension, tenses, and tables of verbs, as obviate wearisome repetition and establish a sequence appreciable by the learner.”Saturday Review.

(a) GENESIS XII. TO THE END; EXODUS I.-XX., XXIV., XXXI.— XXXIV., XL.; (b) Gospel of ST. MATTHEW; (c) ACTS OF THE APOSTLES, XIII. ΤΟ THE END; (d) THE CHURCH CATECHISM.

No student will be examined in more than three of the subjects (a), (b), (c), (d).

(a)

What circumstances distinguished the first Passover alone? Point out some types it contains. What was signified by the sanctification of the male firstborn; how were they replaced later on? What do you know of Miriam? Show that Jehovah Himself guided the march of His people, fought for, and sustained them. Give the occasions and localities of the four murmurings of the people, and the relief vouchsafed chs. xiv. xvii. Show that the curse pronounced against Amalek was fulfilled. What two important events mark ch. xxiv.? Comment and explain, "With bitter herbs they shall eat it," "a mixed multitude went up with them," "this thing is too heavy for thee," "Jehovah-nissi."

(b)

Contrast the different accounts by St. Matthew and St. Mark of the healing of the blind men at Jericho. By what means did the Pharisees endeavour to secure the presence of Christ at the coming Passover; and wherefore? How did He unmask their hypocrisy and foretell His approaching sacrifice? (Compare Matt. xx.; Mark x. vv. 33-34; Luke xiii. vv. 31-35; John xi. v. 49-53.) Why were the disciples unable to comprehend Christ's plain warnings regarding His passion and death?

(c)

What previous experiences probably determined the centurion to interfere in Paul's behalf? How did the Apostle gain ascendency over the minds of the islanders? Comment on his reception at Rome, and the comparative freedom which he enjoyed. Show that his preaching there followed the same course as in Asia and Corinth. Explain "barbarians."

(d)

What glorious privileges are included and recognized when Christ bids us address "Our Father, which art in Heaven"? Show that the "Explanation" justly defines the various clauses of the "Lord's Prayer." Which of them name our daily wants? By what measure is forgiveness meted to us? Whence is the closing Doxology derived? What is the crowning glory of the Kingdom and power of God? Comment on "daily bread," "deliver us from evil."

PAULINE, INTRODUCTION, SECTIONS 1-5 INCLUsive.

Account for the apparent discrepancy between chs. xxiii. v. 20, and xxiv. vv. 9-11. What do you know of Jethro and his descendants? Cite an instance of the prevailing power of continued prayer. What was typified by the cleansing, ch. xix. v. 10? What gave rise to the re-establishment of the Sabbath? Give reasons for regarding Moses as the author of this narrative. (See also Junior Paper.)

(b)

On what three occasions of healing was Christ addressed as the Son of David; what was implied? What is probably referred to ch. xvi. v. 28? What is the requisite wedding garment; in what was the guest probably clothed; who detected the difference? Of what class of believers is he the type?

(c)

Why is it generally conceded that St. Paul suffered a second and more rigorous imprisonment at Rome, of which Acts gives no account? Give instances of St. Paul's zeal for the conversion of his countrymen. (See also Junior Paper.)

(d)

Give proofs of the following assertions: (i) Jesus is the promised Christ. (ii) It is imperative to believe this. (iii) The Son had an existence of long duration, prior to His human birth. (iv) The reality of His human nature (soul and body). (v) Christ suffered in His human nature. (vi) Scripture teaches Christ's descent into "hell" without plainly stating it. (vii) The Trinity co-operated in the Resurrection. Enlarge on the vital importance of the Resurrection to us, and on its meritorious cause. What is implied by the session at the Father's right hand? Give its effects and final consequences. What will be the nature

of the future judgment?

(e)

Why does Paley consider that the argument of the Epistle to the Galatians tends to prove its antiquity, and that we may conclude that it and the Acts were written without inter-communication, though both describe the same transactions?
