On the 5th of June, I left Cork to return to London. pleasures of the rod and line will tire, and (such is the effect of habit, and a desire to fulfil one's worldly duties) I was longing once again to get back, and into harness. I had a quick passage to Bristol, and railed along the broad-guage to Paddington, without a thought whether the line on which I travelled was a dividend-paying one or otherwise, being quite satisfied with the easy motion of its carriages, which enabled me to perfect the notes of my "Month's Fishing."

I shall fulfil my promise, and before next May give the description of flies necessary for Lough Dergh.

Sunbeam, bred by Mr. Merry in 1855, is by Chanticleer, out of Sunflower, by Bay Middleton, her dam Io, by Taurus-Problem, by Bay Middleton.

Chanticleer, bred by Mr. St. George in 1843, is by Irish Birdcatcher, out of Whim, by Drone. He came from Ireland with rather a promising character as a race-horse, and went into Mr. Merry's stable after an unsuccessful effort for the Liverpool Cup. The purchase turned out a very good one, for in the very next season the grey won the Northumberland Plate and Goodwood Stakes, the Newcastle and Doncaster Cups, and many other good things. He was put to the stud in 1850, and his stock first appeared in 1854, when he opened well with Bonnie Morn, The Chicken (afterwards Vengeance), Ellermire, Johnny Taft, and Lord Alfred. The following, amongst other winners, have been since put to his credit :-Cocksparrow, Tennessee, Yorkshire Grey, Riseber, Cheery Chap, Childrey, Intercidona, Lady Albert, Lady Alice, Physician, Sunrise, Early Bud, Roquelaire, Chuckle, Esperance, Rara Avis, Meg Merrilies, and the St. Leger winner.

Sunflower, bred by Mr. J. G. Smyth in 1847, was sold early to Mr. Merry. She never came out in public, and went to the stud at three years old. Her produce include Cock-of-the-North in 1852, Sunshine in 1853, Sunrise in 1854, Sunbeam in 1855, the now well-known twoyear-old Rainbow in 1856, a colt in 1857, and another in 1858-all by Chanticleer, to whom she is again stinted. Sunbeam is a yellow bay mare, standing rather over sixteen hands high. She has a lean bloodlike head, with large ears and a full eye.

She has a straight and somewhat ewe neck, very deep shoulders and girth, arched loins, good ribs and strong quarters, drooping towards the tail. Her hocks and knees are also good, but she has not for her size very large bone. Sunbeam has a blaze of white in the face, and one white coronet. She is altogether a catching-looking, racinglike filly, and, notwithstanding her failure for The Oaks, unquestionably one of the very best of her year.

PERFORMANCES.

In 1857, at Liverpool July Meeting, Sunbeam, then two years old, ridden by Alderoft, and carrying 8st. 4lb., won the Mersey Stakes of 15 sovs. each for two year sold, T.Y.C., beating Mr. Eastwood's Proud Preston Peg, 8st. 4lb. (2), Mr. Barber's Polly Peachum, 8st. 2lb. (3), Lord Derby's Bravura, 8st. 4lb., Captain Christie's Orchehill, 8st. 71b., Mr. Walker's Terrific, 8st. 4lb, and Mr. Parr's York, 8st. 10lb. 7 to 2 against Sunbeam, who won by a head.

At the same meeting, ridden by Aldcroft, and carrying 8st., she ran second to Mr. Smith's Conductor, 6st. 121b., for the Nursery Handicap Plate for two years old, T.Y.C. Six others also started. 5 to 4 against Sunbeam, who was beaten by half a length.

At Goodwood, ridden by Wells, and carrying 8st. 71b., she ran second to Mr. Howard's Perfection, 8st. 4lb., for the Findon Stakes of 10 sovs. each, for two years old, T.Y.C. Nine others also ran. 6 to 1 against Sunbeam, who was beaten by a neck.

At York, ridden by Kendall, and carrying 8st. 4lb., she ran third for the Convivial Stakes of 10 sovs. each, for two years old, T.Y.C. Admiral Harcourt's Gildermire, 8st. 1lb. (1), Mr. Parker's Wilton, 8st. 5lb. (2), and eight others also ran. 3 to Ì against Sunbeam, who was beaten two lengths from the winner.

At the same meeting, ridden by Flatmam, and carrying 8st. 4lb., she ran second to Gildermire, 8st. 4lb., for the Rawcliffe Produce Stakes
