the said Sir Tanjore Madava Rau being desirous of promoting the advancemert of sound learning and education amongst Hindus born in the Collectorate of Tarjore, hath determined with the apporobation of the said University of Madras, to institute certain Prizes to be the subject of competition betwen Students born as aforesaid, who shall respectively pass the First Arts Examination and Matriculate at the University at Madras, and to be conferred, awarded and given under such regulations, and accordiug to such schemes as are hereinafter es. tablished and set forth ; And whereas for the purpose of eff-cinating such desire and determination, the said Sir Tanjore Madara Rau hath proposed to give and appropriate the sum of Rupees two thousand and five hundred Four Rupees per cent Government Promissory Notes or Securities of the Government of Ivdia hereinafter particularly mentioned to be applied in such manner as should be deemed most conducive to the purposes aforesaid And hath accordingly this day endorsed over and transferred to the said University of Madras the Promissory Notes or Securities of the Government of India following that is to say one Promissory Note or Security No. 3672 dated the first day of May one thousand eight hundred and sixty-five for Ru• pees one thuusand five hundred, and one other Promissory Note or Security No. 002006 dated the said first day of May one thousand eight hundred and sixty five for the sum of Rupees one thousand.

Now this INDENTURE witnesseth that in further pursuance of the said agreement and for the effectuating the said desire of the said Sir Tanjore Madava Rau and in consideration of the premises, it is hereby agreed and declared that the said University of Madras shall either retain the whole or any part of the said two Promissory Notes or Securities of the Government of India bereinbefore particularized in their present actual state of investment or shall at any time at their discretion sell the same or any part thereof and lay out and invest the proceeds thereof, and also any further sum or sums which may at any time hereafter be received by them under the trusts hereinafter declared in the name or under the legal control of the said University of Madras in any of the public stocks or funds or Securities of the Government of India or in or upon freehold or leasehold or chattel roul securities in the Presidency of Madras and may from time to time vary or transpose such stucks, funds, or seca. rities into or for others of the same or a like nature and shall from time to time receive the dividends and interest which shall accrue due on the said stocks, funds and securities and pay and apply the same interest and dividends as and for certain Prizes, to be the subject of competition between Hindu Students born in the Collectorate of Tanjore and who shall respectively pass the First Arts Examination and Matriculate at the University of Madras withont any limitation as to caste or creed, and to be awarded and given under such regu. lations and according to such scheme as are hereinafter established and set forth and this INDENTURE also witnesseth that for further effectu. ating the said desire of the said Sir Tanjore Malava Rau and in consideration of the premises it is hereby agreed and declared as follows (that is to say.)

1. The income arising from the funds for the time being subject to the trusts herein declared and contained shall be divided into two sums in the proportion of six tenths and four tenths and shall be devoted to maintaining the two Prizes hereinafter named.

2. The two Prizes shall be respectively called or known as the Sir Tanjore Madava Ran's Prizes.

3. The Prizes shall be awarded annually.

4. The Prizes shall be limited to competition between Hinda Students by race born in the Collectorate of Tanjore and who have lived ten years in that Collectorate.

5. The first Prize of six one tenths of the income of the said trust funds shall be awarded to Hindu Students born as aforesaid, who shall stand highest in the First Class at the annual first exa. mination in Arts of the said University of Madras.

6. The second Prize of four one tenths of the income of the said trust funds shall be awarded to the Hindu Students born as aforesaid who shall stand highest at the arnual Matriculation examination of the said University of Madras.

7. The first Prizes shall be awarded at the Firet in Arts and Matri. culation examinations to be held in the month of December one thou. Band eight hundred and sixty-nine.

8. The Prizes shall be awarded either in money or in Books of the like value at the discretion of the said University of Madras.

9. If at any of the said annual First in Arts and Matricnlation Examinations at the said University of Madras there shall be po can: didate who shall succeed in passing the required examination, then and in any such case the Prize or Prizes (as the case may be) shall not be awarded and the amount thereof shall be added to the corpus of the funds for the time being, subject to the trusts of these presents and invested in manner hereinbefore provided.

10. No candidate shall be allowed to compete unless he produces a Certificate of good conduct and satisfactory progress either from the Master of the School in which his studies were prosecuted or from some person whose testimony is accepted as satisfactory by the Syndicate of the University.

11. The Certificates of good conduct shall be in such form as the Senate of the said University of Madras shall from time to time determine.

Provided always and it is hereby agreed and declared that it shall be lawful for the Senate of the said University of Madras at the ex. piration of three years from the date of these presents and also at the expiration of every succeeding three years to make any new Regulations with respect to the said Prizes or either of them and the terms upon which the same may be obtained or the mode and subject of the examinations for the same either instead of the regulations herein contained or in addition thereto and such regulations when so made shall be of the same force and effect as if they had been inserted in these presents and the regulations herein contained (if any) instead of which thəy shall be made had been omitted from these presents. Provided nevertheless that the said Senate of the said University of Madras shall have no power to divide the said Prizes respectively or reduce the amount thereof respectively. In witness whereof the said Sir Tanjore Madava Rau hath hereunto set his hand and seal and the Senate of the said University of Madras have caused the Common seal of the said University to be hereunto affixed the day and year

THE MAHARAJAH OF TRAVANCORE'S SCHOLARSHIP.

This INDENTURE is made the first day of August One thousand eight hundred and Seventy Between His Highness Sri Padmanabha Dasa Vanchi Bala Rama Vurmah Kulasekhara Kireetapati Munnay Sultan Maharajah Rajah Ramarajah Bahadur Shamsher Jung, G.c.8.1. Maharajah of Travancore of the one part and the University of Madras of the other part. Whereas the said Rama Varmah Maharajah of Travancore being desirous of promoting the advance. ment of sound learning and education amorgst his subjects hath determined with the assent of the said University of Madras to insti. tate a Scholarship for the support of a student in Medicine or Civil Engineering to be open to students, born subjects of the State of Travancore, who have Matriculated in the said University of Madras or passed the First Arts Examination, at the option of the Syndicate, and to be awarded and given under such regulations and according to Buch scheme as are hereinafter established and set forth. And where. As for effectuating such desire and determination, the said Maha. rajah of Travancore hath proposed to gire and appropriate the sam of Ten thousand Rupees to be applied in such manner as should be deemed most conducive to the prirposes aforesaid. And whereas it hath been agreed that the said sum of Ten thousand Rupees should be invested in the name and under the control of the said University of Madras in the manner hereinafter provided, and that the said University of Madras should hold the said sum of Ten thousand Ropees together with all further sums which the said Mithurajah of Travanoore niag hereafter pay to the said University of Madras for the purposes herein provided for and the Securities wherein the same respectively shall from time to time be invested and the interest, dividends and income thereof upon the trusts her«inafter declared and contained concerning the same respectively. And whereas in pursuance of the said Agreement the said Maharajah of Travancore hath this day paid to the Uuiversity of Madras the sum of Ten thousand Rupees. Now this INDENTURE witnesseth that in further pursuance of the said Agree. ment and for effectuating the said desire of the said Maliarajah of Travancore and in consideration of the premises, it is hereby agreed and declared that the said University of Madras shall with all conve. dient speed lay out and invest the said sum of Ten thousand Ropees, and also any other further sums which inay hereafter be paid to them by the said Maharajah of Travauoore in the uame and under the legal

control of the said University of Madrag in any of the public Stocks, or funds or Securities of the Government of India or in or upon freehold or leasehold or chattei real Securitirs in the Presidency of Jadras and may from time to time vary or transpose such stocks, funds, or Securities into or for others of the same or a like nature and shall from time to time receive the dividends aud interest which shall accrue due on the said Stocks, funds and securities and pay and apply the saine interest and dividends as ard for a Scholarship to be open to Students born in the State of Travancore at their Matriculation in the said University of Madras or on their passing the First Arts Exami. nation at the option of the Syndicate, to be awarded and given under such regulations and according to such scheme as are hereinafter established and set forth. And this INDENTURE also witnesseth that for further effectuating the said desire of the said Maharajah of Travancore and in consideration of the premises it is hereby agreed and declared as follows (that is to say.)

I. The income arising from the funds for the time being subject to the trusts herein declared and contained shall be devoted to maintain the scholarship hereinafter named.

II. The Scholarship shall be called or known as the scholarship of the Maharajah of Travancore.

III. The Scholarship shall be awarded by the Syndicate of the University of Madras at their discretion to one of the three students who shall attain the highest number of marks in the Matriculation Examination or to any one of the students who shall pass the First Arts Examination having in view the particular objects to which the Scholarship is devoted namely the Education of a student in the profession of Medicine or of Civil Engineering provided however that in case the Syndicate should not consider the number of marks attained by either of the three Matriculated Students who shall attain the highest marks or by any of the Students who shall pass the First Arts Examination to be satisfactory, the Syndicate shall have the power of abstaining from making any nomination.

IV. The first Scholarship shall be awarded as soon as possible after the results of the first Matriculation and First Arts Examination held after the first day of December next are known.

V. The Scholarship shall be tenable for such period of time from the date of the awarding of the same as the Bye Laws of the University may from time to time require to be completed to render
