II.-FIRST EXAMINATION IN ARTS.

47. The First Examination in Arts shall be held in Madras once a year, commencing on the 15th day of December, unless that day falls on a Sunday, in which case it shall be held on the Monday following. Candidates may also be examined at other places appointed by the Syndicate.

The Syndicate shall publish annually, in the month of January, the list of places at which examinations shall be held.

48. Candidates for this examination must have completed two years from the time of passing the Matriculation Examination either in this or some other Indian University.

49. Applications for this examination must reach the Registrar not later than the 1st of October preceding. Candidates must forward with their application their Matriculation certificate, and also notify the optional language and subject in which they elect to be examined.

50. A fee of 15 Rupees must accompany the application of each Candidate for this examination, and no Candidate shall be registered unless he have previously paid this fee to the Registrar. Candidates failing to pass one examination may be admitted to subsequent examinations on payment of a like fee of 15 Rupees on each occasion.

51. The First Examination in Arts shall be conducted by means of printed papers, which shall be the same for all candidates, and shall be given out to them on the same days and hours at cach place of examination.

52. Candidates shall be examined in the following branches of knowledge :

i. ENGLISH LANGUAGE,

in which each Candidate must undergo examination,

ii. OPTIONAL LANGUAGE.

One of the following languages at the option of the Candi

(2.) A selected portion of Ancient History, to be specified by the Syndicate two years previous to the examination.

(3.) Geography, with special reference to the political, social and commercial condition of countries.

Addition, Subtraction, Division, Involution and Evolution. Greatest Common Measure and Least Common Multiple. Simple and Quadratic Equations, with Problems. Proportion and Variation.

Permutations and Combinations.

Arithmetical, Geometrical and Harmonical Progressions,

Binomial Theorem.

(b) Geometry.

Euclid-Books I., II., III., IV., and VI., with Deductions.

V. OPTIONAL SUBJECT.

Either (a) or (b).

(a) (1.) Geometry.

(2) Plane Trigonometry.

The solution of Plane Rectilineal Figures, with the investigations of the Formulæ required in the several processes.

The construction of Tables of Goniometric Functions.

53. There shall be three papers on the English language, two of which shall bear exclusively on the authors brought up for examination, while the third shall contain passages for paraphrase and explanation not taken from the text-books, and general questions on the grammar, idiom, and structure of the language.

The examination in the optional language shall comprise two papers, which shall contain passages to be translated into English and vice versâ as well as passages for paraphrase or explanation, and questions on the grammar, idiom, and structure of the language. The passage for translation from English into the vernaculars shall be the same for all languages.

54. The paper on Euclid, Books I. to VI., and Algebra, as well as that on Euclid, Book XI,, and Plane Trigonometry, shall consist mainly of book-work, and the riders and problems introduced into it shall be only of moderate difficulty.

55. The questions in each subject shall be of a varied character, but they shall not be more in respect of number or of difficulty, than can be answered within the allowed time by a Candidate of decided ability well prepared in the subject.

56, The First Examination in Arts shall be conducted in the

order of time and subject set forth in the following table, and the number of marks assignable to each subject shall be as therein specified :

57. The Examiners shall be appointed not less than three months before the time fixed for the examination, in order that they may have ample time for exercising care and deliberation in the preparation of their papers.

58. Previous to the transmission of the Examination papers to the Registrar, the Examiners shall hold a Meeting at which each Examiner shall submit his papers and also the value which he intends to assign to each question; in the event of a difference of opinion, the decision of the majority of the Examiners present shall prevail.

59. Within one month from the completion of the Examination, the Examiners, shall furnish to the Registrar a tabular statement prepared in the annexed form, exhibiting the results of the examination, together with a letter containing any remarks or suggestions which they may consider to be deserving of the attention of the Senate.

60. The Candidates shall be ranked in the order of profi*100 marks are allowed for Sanscrit, Greek, Latin, Arabic and Persian,

ciency as determined by the total marks obtained by each, and shall be arranged in two classes

The 1st, consisting of those who have obtained not less than one-half of the aggregate number of marks.

The 2nd, of those who have obtained not less than one-third of the aggregate number of marks.

Candidates failing to obtain one-third of the marks in English, one-fourth in each of the other branches, or one-third upon the whole, shall not pass.

The Examiners shall be at liberty to bracket men when the difference between them amounts only to a very small number of marks.

61. A certificate signed by the Registrar shall be given to each passed Candidate, setting forth the date of the examination, the optional language and subject in which he was examined, and the class in which he was placed. Form of tabular statement to be submitted by the Examiners.
