129. At the end of one week from the last day of examination the Examiners shall arrange the successful candidates in the order of merit as ascertained by the numerical results of the examination.

SECOND EXAMINATION.

130. The second M. B. and C. M. Examination shall be held in Madras once a year commencing on the third Monday in July.

131. Candidates must produce certificates of having passed the Preliminary Scientific and First M. B. and C. M. Examination; of having, subsequently to passing their First M. B. and C. M. Examination, been engaged, at least, two years, in Medical studies; and of having attended the following courses:

Surgery-two courses of, at least, 100 lectures each.

Medicine and Pathology-two courses of, at least, 100 lectures each.

Midwifery, &c.-one course of, at least, 80 lectures.

Medical Jurisprudence-one course of, at least, 60 lectures. Hygiene-one course of, at least, 40 lectures.

Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery-one course of, at least, 40 lectures.

Organic Chemistry, (the Medical Chemistry of animal secre tions, morbid products, &c.)-one course. Operative Surgery-one course.

Clinical Surgery-three courses of, at least, 40 lectures each. Do. MedicineOf having attended the Surgical and Medical practice of a recognized Hospital during four academic years, contemporaneously with the abovementioned lectures on Clinical Surgery and Clinical Medicine; of having attended the practice of an Ophthalmic Hospital during six months; of having attended the practice of a Midwifery Hospital during three months; of being competent to attend cases of labour; of having performed the principal major and minor surgical operations on the dead body, and of having dissected during two Winter Sessions.

132. Candidates must also produce reports with comments of six Medical and of six Surgical cases observed and recorded by themselves, and certified by the professors of Medicine and Surgery respectively of the School at which the Candidate has studied.

133. These certificates shall be transmitted to the Registrar at least fourteen days before the date of examination, along with a fee of Rupees 30.

134. Candidates shall be examined in the subjects above specified in accordance with the following scheme:

Candidates failing to obtain one-third of the marks in each subject, or one-half of the aggregate number, shall not pass.

135. Candidates are expected to exhibit the mode of applying surgical apparatus of kinds; to undertake the chemical examination of morbid products, and to have a fair knowledge of the mode of employing the microscope in the detection of normal and abnormal objects connected with the study of medicine.

136. At the end of one week from the last day of examination, the Examiners shall arrange the successful candidates in the order of merit, as ascertained by the numerical results of the examination. A certificate, under the seal of the University and signed by the Chancellor shall be delivered to each passed candidate.

137. Candidates who have been exempted under former rules from examination in Comparative Anatomy and Hygiene on taking the degree of M. B. and C. M. shall be required to undergo examination in these subjects on proceeding to the Degree of M. D.

138. In certain exceptional cases, to be decided upon by the Syndicate, candidates will be permitted to appear for the Preliminary Scientific and First Examinations in the same year, and to come up in the succeeding year for the Second or Pass Examination, on condition that the requisite certificates be presented, and that the total period of study does not fall short of five years.

VIII.

EXAMINATION FOR DEGREE OF DOCTOR
OF MEDICINE.

139. Candidates who have obtained the degree of M. B. and C. M. will be permitted to proceed to the degree of M. D without examination, on producing a certificate of having been engaged two years in the practice of their profession subsequent to having taken the degree of M. B. and C. M. of this or of some other recognized University. From the 1st January 1872 candidates will be required to have graduated in Arts.

140. Each candidate must produce a testimonial, signed by at least two Doctors of Medicine, that he is in habits and character a fit and proper person for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.

141. The certificates shall be transmitted to the Registrar at least one month before the date of the Convocation conferring degrees, along with a fee of Rupees 50.

142. Graduates of the Medical College shall be allowed to present themselves for the degree of M. D. on producing the diploma of the Medical College and a certificate of having been engaged subsequently for five years in the practice of their profession.

143. Graduates shall forward their certificates and the testimonial indicated in para. 140 to the Registrar at least fourteen days before the date of examination, along with a fee of Rs. 50.

144. They shall pass an examination in accordance with the following scheme:—

145. At the end of one week from the last day of the examination the Examiners shall arrange the successful candidates in the order of merit, as ascertained by the numerical results of the examination,

146. This examination shall be held once a year, at such time as the Syndicate shall determine.

Form of application for admission to the M. B. and C. M.

IX.-EXAMINATION FOR DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF CIVIL
ENGINEERING.

147. An examination for the degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering shall be held at Madras once a year, commencing on the second Monday in February.

148. Candidates for the degree of B. C. E. must have completed two years from the time of passing the First Examination in Arts either in this or one of the other Indian Universities. 149. Candidates for the degree of B. C. E. must apply to the Registrar for admission to the examination not later than the 1st November preceding, at the same time sending in their certificate of having passed the First Examination in Arts, and notifying the optional subjects in which they elect to be examined.

150. A fee of 30 Rupees must be paid by each candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering and no candidate shall be examined unless he have previously paid this fee to the Registrar. Candidates failing to pass one examination may be
